Diesel G-Wagon on Craigslist

Sweet truck but wouldn't that be an illegal import just like a diesel Defender from the same year?

Why illegal? I've owned an 1985 MB diesel van that was a legal grey market van. In fact it was imported by Europa that was the official US importer of G-Wagons.

Could also be a 1985 model but built in 1984 which makes it DOT exempt as per the 25 year and older rule you have in the US.

Lots of mid 80's G wagons around that are totaly legal. More 1980's legal G's out there than are not.

The photos show a license plate on the rear of the vehicle, so some state must think it's legal for the street. I'd ask if there is a plate in the engine compartment indicating which company imported the vehicle and brought it into compliance with safety and emissions controls.

I am just guessing that the DOT rules have changed in the 25 years to what we have now. I had a 1985 M5 that was legally imported to the US in 1989.

If all the DOT/EPA paper work is in order then there is no problem. If its not...

Most of the G-wagens that are here gas and diesel are legal and were brought in by a registered importer and federalized. But some weren't so when looking at any gray market vehicle its always good to see the paper work.
