Diesel mileage for a F450 with 6.4 diesel.

I am switching from my Dodge to a F450 4 x 4 crew cab Cab and Chassis as the platform for my flat bed camper build. What kind of mileage are owners getting with the 6.4 loaded or unloaded.

Not very good, from what I'm hearing. Low sulfur fuel, particulate filter, etc.

From all I've found checking Diesel Stop and other Ford forums you're likely to see mpg in the 10-13mpg loaded and 13-15mpg unloaded. Several Earthroamer owners on this forum have reported their mileage in the 12-13mpg range.

Several issues will impact the mileage, including your choice of wheelbase, axle ratio (4.3 vs. 4.88), transmission (auto vs. manual), etc. If you add any lift and/or offroad tires you'll also impact mileage. The other big factors will be height of camper, overall weight of the rig, and your own driving habits.

Hope this helps. Please post specifics about your proposed build.

Just for reference

I'm planning a similar build and purchased a 2004 Chevy crew cab long box LB7 duramax, 6" lift, 35" tires and 3.55 gears and if I drive conservatively I get exactly 20mpg average with mileage calculations by distance not by the dash unit. This is combo of city/highway driving. I've heard that recent models designed for the new emissions stardards are getting a few mpg less based on all the additional emissions equipment.

I have a freind who just traded in his 6.0 F350 with an Edge programer & 4.30 gears for an 6.4 F450 pickup with 4.88 gears. He is very happy & says it pulls his 14K lb toy box better. He did mention that it gets about 3 - 5 mpg less. Hope this helps.

Masterplumber thanks. I drive it home from the dealer at got 14mpg stripped to the chassis. I has been in the shop since then. I would be happy if it always got 14. I think it will have about 5500LB on it when it leaves. I fI can got 12 I will be happy. That is what the Dodge gets.
