Differences between FE and FG manual transmissions

Are the manual 5spd transmissions in FE's and FG's the same or different? In other words, is the transfer case in an FG just bolted to the back of an FE 5spd so an FE 5spd can replace an FG 5spd?
I'm wondering because my syncros are worn and I'm debating whether purchasing a used 5spd, rebuilding it, and putting it in my Fg might be a better course of action than rebuilding my existing one since I'd end up with a spare transmission if I do a swap.

The 2002 - 2004 service manual only talks about 1 transmission for both the FE and the FG.

From the diagram the FE has a rear cover that is removed when the transfer case is used for the FG.

If you are going to rebuild yours or another transmission, a service manual sounds like a necessity.

That sounds like good news. I do have a CD manual, but it's in the glove compartment of the truck 10 miles away in the storage lot.

Anyone know what year 5 spd's are interchangeable? Mine's a 99.
