i can only assume you've given up on finding a nice RR mk1 1987-1994 or RRC 1995.

Then D1. lots of kids or friends se7.. assuming you want them along.

Thor not a lot of RRC in my area for some reason.... So D1 may be the logical/economical choice.. is the RR 1994 really a logical choice over the d1?

Get an 87 or 88 Range Rover Classic and never look back. Had an 87 RRC, 00 DII and, currently, an 04 DII. Looking for that early RRC to make my day again.

Good luck.

Logic is a strong word for a Land Rover decision. Buy one fall in love. Feed it oil when it leaks.. if you're adding more than a quart a month, check the seals.

Modify it to your needs and whims.

Be happy!

I happen to love the Rock Star feeling of the first body style RR.

You need at least 35" tires.

Disco 1: Simpler, easier to maintain, cheaper to buy.

Disco 1: More luxurious, safer, quieter, wider, twice the rear storage capacity, more horsepower. Traction control works great, when it's working. ABS works better than D1, when it's working. The rear overhang is a PITA for serious off-roading, but it can be improved a lot. Harder to repair due to more proprietary "blackbox" systems and modern vehicle design (unit bearing hubs, etc.) But, will have lower miles, better condition, etc. on average, just due to the age difference.

That's it, in a nutshell.

The 5 spd D-I is a blast...

the TReK isnt so bad either:sombrero:

but back to the original question: ive owned both and 2 d2's. the 2004 disco i have now is by far my favorite, i drive it daily and its alot nicer on the road than a d1...but after reading your post that it wont be your dd, i too will have to say get a d1 and go mod the heck out of it, and have a blast with it!

Agreed... A 1st Gen Rangie on 35's (tall skinny 35's to be specific) would be an AWESOME rig.... I mean come-on... that is just a DEAD SEXY truck right there. ANd this from a Dedicated Toyota-phile eh ;)

OT, but how long did the original 1st gen Body style Rangie stick around??? I ask cause I think being that all the ones I've seen are from I belive the seventies... a full interior re-make would just be a pre-req for me. brown and orange just aren't my thing (that one seems to have a perfectly lovely color scheme but I think it'd be awesome to mod-in a newer Rangie or even a Disco dash and some baja-RS seats plus a hidden full-cage)

back On topic: And I say this with NO personal ownership experience (Have friends with both DI and II's and wheel with them from time to time) , BUT if I WERE ever to buy a Disco, I think I'd have to go with a 5spd Manual DI if one could be found. I dislike Auto's for many reasons and I'd be looking to drop a Turbo-Diesel in it so I think that'd fit MY needs the best. yours...maybe less so.

Cheers

Well, last year I bought a 98 DI auto...the other day I just bought a 95 DI manual to replace it. I'll let that speak for itself:
