DIY Trailer / Roof Top Tent

There's nothing wrong with associating the name with Moab, Ut IMO.. Plenty of outdoor enthusiasts utilize RTT's. I see them all the time headed south, Honda Elements, VW Vans, Hummer pick-up, sedans, coupes, all the way up to the more regular Toyota's or Rovers..

The RTT isn't specifically for gearheads, and 4x4 enthusiasts. THerefore, I think that M.O.A.B. is fine to use.

Sami, thanks for you input.

Hopefully nobody will get the wrong idea when they find out that you have a M.O.A.B. mounted to your roof, or trailer.. ;)

Hmmm, something tells me if I had that variation of a M.O.A.B. on the roof of my new Zuki, all you'd see is a white pancake with four tires under it :sombrero:

Is there a link to this tent where I can see it? I didn't see it at Kirkham's web site.

It looks like this is going to be strictly a trailer top tent, right? I'm looking at RTTs.

Thanks,
Stephanie

Thanks Markgyver for posting the links.

Stephanie, Kirkhams is sewing the tents for me, but it's not a product they will be selling. I'll be the one selling them. I optimized the design for trailer top usage and have initially focused on working the bugs out for trailer top usage. In working out the design, I planned for using it in roof top applications also. I just haven't started on working the details out for roof top usage yet.

Update: First batch of tents should be finished getting sewed any day now. Then I'm keeping my fingers cross I don't get delays on the pole fabrication work.

It's a questions of when, not if, only so many hours in a day :sombrero: Since being able to also use it as a roof top tent was designed into, there is only some parts sourcing items like mounting tracks and ladders to work out.

In that case, I'm bookmarking this in my list of RTTs. Things that are important to me include a veranda over the ladder just like the ARB Simpson III and the annex, and of course fully zipped no-see-um doors like on that tent, unlike the Eezi Awn which does not (bottom of no-see-um door is NOT sealed on the platform on the ladder end!). I want to sleep, read, eat, and go to the bathroom without going out into the rain. That also means keeping to the ability to mount the tent on the vehicle with the ladder to the sides as well as the back. The back configuration is so I can cook and prep things on the tailgate of my Scout II. And if at all, keep this as lightweight as you can, as if I get an RTT that weighs over 100 lbs, I have to get someone to put it on with me.

Thanks!
Stephanie

Stephaine, if you drop me an email at scott@cttct.com , I'll add you to my "update" list. Thanks for your needs input.

The doors are D-shaped and fully zippered.

For roof top applications, I'll have to determine if it's best to just lengthen the current changing room design or extend it under the platform also. The current over the door awning makes the changing room 3' deep.

Overall weight will be more a function of material choice when building your platform. I'll be putting together some weight estimates for various construction and material choices. I would expect most tent / platform combinations for a roof top application to be 100-110 lbs. It would be easy to get that down to 50-60 lbs, although the trade-off is cost. Shaving pounds isn't cheap.

Just a quick note, I’m very happy to announce that the first batch of MOAB tent bodies just arrived :wings: :wings:

Still have documentation to complete and need to get some pole sets ready. I should have some ready to go by the end of next week. Stay tuned for more pictures and information shortly.

When you say it is a kit, how much "work" will be needed to get it up and functional. I had a few suggestions but I guess its a little late

1. bigger bed
2. different color , match the changing room to the rest of the tent, looks ghetto with that blut

good luck

Ok, I've bit my tongue for a bit on this as I thought something would stick out eventually, but I'm still confused and I just have to ask.

On your website, it lists some prices. The point of this DIY tent was to keep the price down. However, the prices are in line with Camping Labs tents which are already complete. What do these have that the Camping Labs tents don't that would make me want to spend the same amount and be required to complete it?
