DIY Trailer / Roof Top Tent

I do not plan on including a mattress as part of the standard kit, althought I'm looking at some mattress options that I can make available.

Can't go wrong with Kirkham...

If this kit is going to be assembled by the folks at Kirkham, you will have a great product. I have their awning and it is really nice. Craftsmanship is exceptional.:wings:

Good luck with your project...

I concur, Kirkham's Springbar tents, awning,, etc roof bags are a great product, premium grade fabric and the highest standards of craftmenship make for products that are built to last.

I've worked with Kirkham's on optimizing the design. The tent bodies and changing rooms will be sewn at their facility, from the same materials and by the same people doing their Springbar tents.

I will be pulling together the other kit components, then "you" will be doing the assembling of it.

Subscribing to this thread. Great name and concept. While not as large as the Camping Labs Serengetti RTT/Changing room tent, you're coming in at less than 1/3 the cost. That's fantastic!!!

I like the RTT idea on a trailer, but the one drawback is a changing room that most RTT's don't have!

Keep us posted!!!

If you do not mind my input...

I do not think that MOAB is a good name for the tent. Are you trying to assosiate it with the Moab area, and jeep trails/bike trails? If so then I guessy you did that, but I do not think that it would go over well in that community.

If I were you I would drop the O. and just go with M.A.B. Besides, outdoor would rather be implicit in the fact that it is a tent mounted to a trailer...

Good luck, either way. I too will be watching to see how it goes for you!

Brentba, Thanks! Yes it has a smaller footprint, overall it's designed for compact trailers, I normally shoot for 400-500 lb dry weight when I build one. The Serengeti trailer tent and Globetrotter are also different in they use a fixed, non-folding platform. For folks that are mechanical inclined and enjoy building things with their own two hand, "sweat equity" can be a wonderful thing.

Brian, thanks for sharing your thoughts. When you say community are you referring to the community of Moab or the community of jeepers / bikers that come to enjoy the Moab area?

Turner, thanks, yes it is designed around a folding style platform. Closed it is 56" wide and normally 48" long, although you can make the bottom half of the platform up to 54" long depending on the top of your trailer. Note, in the pictures that half of the floor platform acts as a top on my trailer.

Until I picked up my pop-up I was going to build a trailer like yours.

:wings: They started cutting the pieces today for the first batch of tents :wings:

They expect to have them completed and shipped to me early the week of Dec 14th. Now if the other fabbed pieces fall into place, they'll be ready to ship just before Xmas.

Still waiting for a few numbers before finalizing cost, right now, looks like introductory pricing will be right at $800 with a changing room.
