Does your Trans. light come on when using CDL?

We had a good winter storm last night and I was out playing in the snow. I popped the CDL on going about 15-20mph nice and smooth. After a few minutes the trans. temp. warning light ( red ) came on for about 20 seconds while we were running 25-30mph??

it was brief

never had that happen - is this simply because it may have been a long time since it was used or .... do I need to check or it wouldn't hurt to investigate further?

bought the truck with 40K on it a few months ago and now at 55K and running sweet - it is a 2004 Disco

my first 2004 never experienced this

thx

No, it's not normal for me. Never seen it before.

Any chance you stuffed it into a snow bank or somehow else plugged the cooling package with snow?

How cold was it outside?

The D2 only has an air/oil cooler, no intank radiator system. Ford had a problem with this in really cold temps on some of their trucks like the 2002+ Explorer. Below about -20F, the oil in the cooler would have the consistency of jello, and could not be pumped. Therefore, that cold fluid would stay in there and not get replaced with warm fluid. The trans could actually be burning up if you were working it hard enough, even though it was freezing outside. The condition also caused lubrication problems for the tail of the transmissions.

Hey Rob,

good questions. It was fairly "warm" about 20 to 30'F. no where near zero temps or below

conditions were sloppy - 3+ inches of snow/slush on the road - slick roads, steep descents - i did back it up into a snowbank but only slightly while maneuvering a tight spot. Only the rear hit the bank and it was soft snow

I wasn't horsing it or anything, but I thought I'd ask since I had never seen that before

I'm going to go back out this morning and play with the CDL and see if it happens again - if not I'm just going to attribute it to it being a former Florida resident and having NO signs of off-road wear ever, no one ever used the CDL. It was well cared for

what is everyone using for engine oil? I know the Dealers like Castrol just curious

I'm using Castrol Syntec 5W40. It's a little more expensive, but it's the only one that I can find that meets the ACEA A3/B3 spec. And it works when it's hot, cold, whatever.
