I would recommend a lip around that lower shelf but it's a really cool looking design.

Yes, it will be pipe as well. Thanks, seems safe, effective and simple. The shelf will have a lip around it, everything will be stored in baskets and lashed down when needed. Going to try and knock the kitchen out over the next week......
