Edgestar Fridge Modifications Thread

You would have to check the voltage at the fridge while it is running (this might be difficult if it keeps turning off).

I agree, almost guaranteed it's your wiring causing your issue. The Edgestar's LVC is something around 10.8 volts... By the time it cuts off, your battery should be about done anyway, so there's little to gain by disabling it.
The higher voltage you will get from better wiring will also let the fridge draw less current, so it might actually run a little longer.
I have #10 AWG running from the battery on mine to a socket in the back of the truck.

I believe I have 10 gauge wire now. It's standard stuff you find at Lowes/Home Depot. Should I be looking for a higher quality wire?

#10 wire is pretty much #10 wire as far as current carrying ability goes, at least as long as it's made of copper (not steel or aluminum).

Maybe you have resistance in one of your connections somewhere that is causing the issue (fuseholders can create issues if the fuse isn't seated into them well), or your ground connection is inadequate.

Try this:
Hook your voltmeter up nearby the fridge (ideally right at it's DC socket), and then try to start the fridge while you watch the voltmeter. If it should dip down below 11.5 volts for a moment while the fridge tries to start, then that's your issue. Also check that the battery itself isn't failing (a good, fully-charged battery shouldn't drop more than 0.2-0.3V just from the load of the fridge).

I'm going to bet you have a battery that drops voltage . I bought a new Diehard last year and had nothing but problems with my fridge after that. Sure, truck would start, but fridge would not run for more than 30 minutes after the engine was shut off. Just picked up a new battery from Walmart of all places (made by Interstate) and now, no problems. This weekend, it ran for 12-15 hours on battery alone with no problems or shutoff. So if you recently changed batteries, take it back.

Well, I don't have the 2nd spare thermistor (but it's a brilliant idea on their part)...I'm going on 5 years now with my FP430...but I think my thermistor has gone south.
Anyone have any experience adding their own thermistor? (the stock on is buried in the spray foam, under the aluminum liner, so I prefer not to dig it out but rather add a new one myself)

FP630 Temperatures

I have a new FP630 Edgestar set at 5 degrees. When the temp hits 7 the unit turns on but the temp continues to rise to 9 degrees before starting to go down. Is this normal? I have added extra insulation (vents all clear) and the unit takes about 19 minutes to go from 7 deg to 9 deg to 2 deg. Air temp is 85 deg.

Hm...not normal to me. For example my FP430 gets down to -8 no problem.

I just bought a new Edgestar FP430. It works well and seems like a great unit. However, when we first plugged it in inside the house to test it, there was a noticeable odor, like a "warm electronics" type of smell. I noticed it, but it doesn't bother me too much. My wife, however, can't stand the smell and is very sensitive to it. We ran it for several hours near an open door. We have since used it for two overnight camping trips. The odor is less, but still noticeable. It currently isn't a problem in the back of our Tacoma, but we bought this to ultimately be used inside a camper van next year. If the odor doesn't go away, there is no way we can use it "indoors". Is this normal on new units, and will it go away?

I recall a faint "new electronics"/"new motor" odor from mine when it was new, but nowadays I can only smell it just barely if it's running in a very hot room while on AC power, otherwise I don't notice it at all anymore.

One of which really surprises me that NO ONE has bought one of these especially with all the people looking for 12v power cords.

1. 90º C7 Polarized power cord. - I make my own power cords so buying the 90º and then terminating it into a 12v plug is no biggie.

Find me a source, and I'll be all over this. I haven't been able to find a single polarized 90° connector for sale that wasn't on alibaba or the like. I'm prepared to chop up a cable, make my own, whatever.
