Do you have more specifics on the 3rd Gen 4Runner install? The only rack I've found so far that offers compatibility is the Baja Rack but this seems to have an extra level of badassedness.

Eezi-Awn K9 Roof Rack Installation Instructions

Eezi-Awn K9 Roof Rack Installation Instructions

I think the best way to explain the installation of the roof racks would be to share the actual Installation Instructions that come with the racks. Click on this link to see view the instructions

Eezi Awn K9 Roof Rack Installation Guide

Scroll down the PDF to the appropriate application
Section 1: Gutter Mount Applications, such as Land Rover Defenders and Land Cruiser 80 Series
Section 2: Gutterless Mount Applications, such as Land Cruiser 100 Series and FJ Cruisers
Section 3: Jeep JK or Canopy Applications, flat topped shells like the Wrangler or a camper shell
Section 4: Land Rover LR3/LR4 Specific Application

These instructions show you the wide variety of applications the K9 Roof Rack System can be used on.

4Runner Applications

For the 4Runner, whatever generation, the sections on gutterless and canopy installation would be appropriate. If you choose the go the route I did on my 5th Gen, you would pay more attention to section 2. The only variant would be drilling your own holes in the universal rail at the appropriate locations to match the truck. The 3rd Gen 4Runner we show the picture of used a combination of techniques from sections 2 and 3. There are existing mounting locations on the roof, but they do not go clear to the front of the roofline. You would drill the rail to match the existing holes as in section 2. Then you would drill the roof and add a metal plate under the head liner or install rubber well nut like they do in section 3. Remember, the instructions in section 3 refer mainly to Wranglers. So you need be careful to not be too literal. Line the front holes up with the OEM holes so that the rail covers them all correctly.

Custom installations Warning:

Custom installations are the responsibility of the owner to complete correctly, and not all hardware will be included. We are happy to help you design a rack for your unique application, but we will not be held responsible for the installation. Please think it through before committing to drilling your roof.

If you have questions on these instructions, please let me know. I would be happy to help.

Cheers,

Toyota 3rd Gen 4Runner Roof Rack Installation

Toyota 3rd Gen 4Runner Roof Rack Installation

Here are a few more photos of the 3rd Gen 4Runner install. Installation of a K9 Roof Rack to this 4Runner was quite straight forward, but not for the faint of heart. It required drilling holes in a perfectly good roof. We matched the mounting point of the OEM rack in the roof to the K9 rail, then added 2 more mounts per side up to the front of the rail next to the sunroof.

Long Rack Option

The first two are of the holes and rubber well nuts we installed to each side of the sunroof.

Here are a couple shots of how the rail lays down on the roof and the feet attach the rail to the platform.

2013-02-05 09.51.46.jpg2013-02-05 09.51.52.jpg

This installation was of a 1250x2000 platform, using 6-60mm feet and a pair of 2M universal rail. It is a great size for this vehicle. Here are a couple more shots of the rack. Please note there are only 4 feet in the photos. This was for transport of the platform only, and not for use in the state. We later added 2 more feet, 1 to each side, for proper load support.

Shorter Rack Alternative

If you are not interested in drilling holes in your roof, there is an alternative to this application. You could use a shorter 1250x1600 platform and only the existing OEM mounting holes. It would be a 3/4 length rack system, and would consist of 1600mm rail, 6-60mm feet and the above mentioned platform. It is a very clean look, only a bit shorter on the roof line.

Cantilever Alternative

Another alternative is what I did on my 5th Gen 4Runner. I only used the OEM mounts for attaching a 2M rail, and used a total of 10 feet (5 per side) spread out the length of the rail to support a 1250x2200 platform. It covers the entire roof line. My logic was that if the rail was secure, and the back 3/4 of the platform was mounted securely to the roof with feet on top of or in between the hardware holding the rail in place, I could float the forward 1/4 of the rack with feet suspending the platform in front of the forward rail hardware. It works. I am careful of weight on the forward end, but I have carried a RTT, 2 Alu-Boxes, a 2.5M awning, and tool mounts up there on very serious trails with no problems at all. Here is a photo of that application.

Just ordered another medium table from you Paul.
Going to retire that folding picnic table.
It has been great, but I always bring along at least two or three camp chairs, so they will work out great with the medium table.

K9 Accessory Adapter

Eezi-Awn K9 Accessory Adapter

The edge of the K9 roof rack is 1-3/8" tall. It has a slight arc to the exterior of the extrusion at the top, and also has a slot on top to accept a 6mm hex head bolt. That slot allows you to attach 6mm stainless steel tie down rings or to mount whatever you would like. But the best utilization of that rack edge is to attach the K9 Accessory Adapter.

Design

The K9 Accessory Adapter is an aluminum cast and powder coated bracket specifically designed to match the contour of the the K9 rack system, fastening to the top edge with 2-6mm bolts. There is a notch on the bottom of the extrusion that tucks under the bottom of the rack edge to hold secure there too. It provides a flat vertical surface with 5 pre-drilled holes that allow you to mount any accessory you want.

Installation

Installation of the adapter is quite simple. Slide the 2 bolts in the top of the adapter into the slot on top of the rack edge, and position anywhere along the edge you choose. Tighten the nylock nuts down and that is it. The adapter holds strong to the rack edge.

Uses

Now the side of the K9 Roof Rack has utility. You can use the holes in the adapter to mount anything you want. Our first use for the adapter was to attach the optional "L" brackets to mount a Series 2000 2.5M awning. We used the top center hole to attach the bracket, and then slid the awning into the female welt on the top of the bracket. A small set screw in the bottom portion of the bracket holds the awning in place. The optional brackets are not necessary to mount an awning to the accessory adapters. You can mount the awning directly through the back surface of the awning too. It's a matter of preference. We chose to show the brackets as an option, but less than half of our awning sales choose to use them.

Eezi-Awn has developed a line of tool mounts for the K9 Rack. We will be launching them for the US market shortly. Several of the mounts are designed specifically to attach to the accessory adapter, namely the shovel mount and axe mount. The accessory adapters are sold in pairs, so a pair would mount an awning or a pair would be enough for both the shovel and axe mounts. Stay tuned for the launch of the mounts here first.

Thanks Kurt.

The K9 Accessory Adapters measure 3-1/8"W x 2-3/4"H (80mm x 70mm). The 3 top holes are spaced horizontally 1-3/16" (30mm) apart, and the 2 bottom holes are spaced 2-3/8" (60mm) apart. The left 2 holes and right 2 holes are vertical to each other, spaced 2-1/16" (53mm) apart. Each hole is 6mm in diameter, so that is .236". I use 6mm stainless hardware. There is a recessed slot on the backside of the adapter that is designed to captivate a 6mm nut or nylock. A 1/4" bolt will fit through the hole, but a 1/4" nut is too large to fit the recess. In general terms, the K9 Accessory Adapter provides a roughly 3"x3" vertical surface to mount whatever you want, and expands the utility of the K9 Roof Rack System immensely.

Eezi Awn 1400 on 80 Series

jon_80_ez.jpg

Thanks for sharing this photo Kurt. Nice install.

This is K9 Roof Rack System for the Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series, 2.2M length. The platform is 87"Lx55"Wx1-3/8"H (2200mm x 1400mm). It is supported by a series of 6 legs that are 4-3/4" wide and can vary in height from 5-3/4" to 6-1/4", and they can tilt to adjust for the angle of the roof line. The entire rack system is only 69 lbs. It is a great expedition grade solution for the 80 Series platform.

Received my second medium K9 table Saturday.
Just getting around now to "peeling" off the protective coating.

I want to share how well Ezi-Awn goes out of their way to make sure your table arrive with zero scratches on it.
The table top and sides are protected with a sheet that fits the table tightly that you must peel off.
Very nice!

MaxTrax on the K9 Roof Rack

MaxTrax on the K9 Roof Rack

We thought we would try something new for the K9 Racks. I have a set of tan Max Trax that we have used for some time. The trick was how to carry them on the new vehicle. I was a little amazed to find out that the slot widths for the tie-down locations on the sand ladders were the same as two of the slat slots on the rack system. We assembled a series of 4 - 8mmx2" bolts with fenders/lock washers/wing nuts, and attached the 2 MaxTrax to the top of the platform.

IMG_0919.JPG

The attachment was really easy, and they are held on there very well. Our next goal is to see if we can adapt the MaxTrax Mounting Pin Set to a 8mm bolt that will fit in the K9 Rack slots. This will improve accessibility and make them easy to lock down. Stay tuned.

Cheers,
