Toyota 3rd Gen 4Runner Roof Rack Installation
Toyota 3rd Gen 4Runner Roof Rack Installation
Here are a few more photos of the 3rd Gen 4Runner install. Installation of a K9 Roof Rack to this 4Runner was quite straight forward, but not for the faint of heart. It required drilling holes in a perfectly good roof. We matched the mounting point of the OEM rack in the roof to the K9 rail, then added 2 more mounts per side up to the front of the rail next to the sunroof.
Long Rack Option
The first two are of the holes and rubber well nuts we installed to each side of the sunroof.
Here are a couple shots of how the rail lays down on the roof and the feet attach the rail to the platform.
This installation was of a 1250x2000 platform, using 6-60mm feet and a pair of 2M universal rail. It is a great size for this vehicle. Here are a couple more shots of the rack. Please note there are only 4 feet in the photos. This was for transport of the platform only, and not for use in the state. We later added 2 more feet, 1 to each side, for proper load support.
Shorter Rack Alternative
If you are not interested in drilling holes in your roof, there is an alternative to this application. You could use a shorter 1250x1600 platform and only the existing OEM mounting holes. It would be a 3/4 length rack system, and would consist of 1600mm rail, 6-60mm feet and the above mentioned platform. It is a very clean look, only a bit shorter on the roof line.
Cantilever Alternative
Another alternative is what I did on my 5th Gen 4Runner. I only used the OEM mounts for attaching a 2M rail, and used a total of 10 feet (5 per side) spread out the length of the rail to support a 1250x2200 platform. It covers the entire roof line. My logic was that if the rail was secure, and the back 3/4 of the platform was mounted securely to the roof with feet on top of or in between the hardware holding the rail in place, I could float the forward 1/4 of the rack with feet suspending the platform in front of the forward rail hardware. It works. I am careful of weight on the forward end, but I have carried a RTT, 2 Alu-Boxes, a 2.5M awning, and tool mounts up there on very serious trails with no problems at all. Here is a photo of that application.
Cheers,
