Electric Brakes

I just bought an axle with electric brakes and am having some trouble wiring it up. I know that the wiring on the truck is good, and I even checked the wiring from the connector to the axle and I know that it is is getting a signal from the brake controller. However, the brakes won't engage and the brake controller indicates that there is no connection. Has anyone ever installed a new axle with electric brakes? There were no instructions that came with the axle, so I just assumed that the wire coming out of each side of the axle is the hot and is what is hooked up to the brake controller. Any ideas?

Won't engage? Or won't lock the wheel up? There is a right and left to the brakes. If the axle was installed 180 deg off it will not lock the wheels up.

Did not catch that you were getting "Not connected", i was just saying if the axle is installed backwards it wont stop the trailer correctly. sounds like a ground problem though
