Ends of the Earth Expedition: Central America

we have successfully completed the shipping logistics, and the trucks are in the port of Manzanillo (shipping 4/4). I now have a new friend... for a few days.

We leave for Punta Mariato, and the most southern accessible land point in North America :)

Well, both are true.

Central America is not traditionally considered a continent, so Punta Marieto is the southern-most land mass point on the North American Continent, as well as the southern-most point of geographic region of North America called Central America ;)

A continent is one of several large landmasses on Earth. They are generally identified by convention rather than any strict criteria, with seven regions commonly regarded as continents – they are (from largest in size to smallest): Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.[1]

Here are some more interesting facts about the disparate points of North America:
Extreme points of North America‎
Canada
en.wikipedia.org

This is a list of the extreme points of North America, the points that are farther north, south, east or west than any other location on the continent.

North America

Northernmost Point — Kaffeklubben Island, Greenland (83°40'N)

Southernmost Point — Cocos Island, Costa Rica (5°30'N)

Westernmost Point — Amatignak Island, Alaska, United States (179 06' 31" W) ¹

Easternmost Point — Nordost Rundingen, Greenland (12°08'W) ²

North America (mainland)

Northernmost Point — Murchison Promontory on Boothia Peninsula, Nunavut, Canada (71°58'N)

Southernmost Point — Punta Mariato, Panama

Westernmost Point — Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska, United States (168°05'W)

Easternmost Point — Cape St Charles, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada (55°38'W):¹ According to the 180th meridian. If the International Date Line is considered to define the western most point, then it is Attu Island, at 173°11'E.:² If Greenland is excluded then the easternmost point is — Cape Spear, Newfoundland, Canada (52C37'W).. If one uses the official definition of longitude it is Semisopochnoi Island, Alaska, since the state technically stretches into the eastern hemisphere.

The notion of seven continents is a distinctly 19th century, euro-centric view of the world. I prefer the view of modern geology, which has identified large sections of the planet's crust (plates) that move in relation to each other. From this perspective, Central America is a land mass that has origins and destiny separate from either North or South America. It rides on the Caribbean plate.

I do think that the notion of visiting 7 continents is more romantic, and thus more marketable, than the goal of visiting land masses that form the "ends of the Earth" on the 15 major tectonic plates!

A little of the action trying to get to the end of the road...

Note: No, I am not wearing my moto jacket in that image ;). I had a much greater chance of bodily harm with it on, than off, given the 100 degree heat and near 100% humidity... :Wow1:

Scott,
How far is it from Panama City to the end of the road (D. Gap) and back? Is it a one day ride each way?

Great trip!!:sombrero:

Great trip!!:sombrero:

To the Darien and back is 320 miles RT. With the current paving activities, it could be done in a really long day trip.

IMO, the trip to Punta Mariato is a 10x better, and more beautiful undertaking. Glad I did it. (it takes at least two days for that one).
