Exhaust Problems!

Hey everyone! I have a 2005 Montero Limited that I purchased last summer, and noticed awhile back that the floor of the truck above the muffler gets EXTREMELY hot during driving. I just had my truck looked at because we took a quick family trip to Chicago, and my mechanic noticed there was a part loose on the exhaust (I had him look because I was hearing a rattling noise when driving) which he welded, so I didn't mention the heating problem to him since I figured what he fixed might take care of it--but it did not. Does anyone know what the cause may be? I never had this problem with my 98 Montero, the wife's Suburban, or any other vehicle I've owned. Also, I was thinking of putting on an aftermarket exhaust system at some point--have any Gen III owners done this to theirs??? Thanks for any and all replies!!!

Is there any heat shielding above the muffler? I haven't ridden in the back seat to notice, but I an check it out next time we are going somewhere in our '03.

A clogged cat or improper air/fuel mixture can cause hot exhaust issues.

Mine gets pretty hot on long drives behind the driver's seat area on the floor. After 10 hours of driving it surprised me how hot it was. Good old Mitsu engineering.

I solved the hot flooring issue by using exhaust wrap on all the areas that matter. its lasted 7 years and now i need to rewrap a couple of areas. But it works great and i highly recommend doing this on your Gen 3

Use stove pipe and a rivet gun to make replacement heat shields. Works great. Easy to cut to size, easy to drill.

My kids have never complained about the floor in the back getting hot, but the driver side (front and back) feels much warmer than the passenger side when driving on long trips.

What parts of the system did you end up wrapping? Pipe between cats and muffler...?

I wrapped underneath the drivers side on all but the cat and all the way up the the manifold flange. And that was it...I did the suitcase muffler delete a long time ago and have never looked back.

Do you remember how many rolls of muffler tape it took?

I too deleted the massive oem muffler and the resonator in the rear.

Like mentioned earlier, I have only experienced heat issues after long interstate trips (several hours of constant driving). It is common for the heat shield above the large cat to deteriorate and rattle. I have tried a couple different variations of things on my truck. I think it depends on what your definition of "loud" is as far as removing things...Do you want it to be as quiet as stock? I replaced all 3 cats with OEM replacements (mine were toast and throwing codes), I have pacemaker headers from AUS, and a magnaflow 40 series muffler, resonator delete, and had all the pipe and hangers replaced... This is obviously not practical for everyone, this is definitely not a "quiet" or cheap option but after trying a couple of different things it sounds exactly like I wanted. I like the heat wrap idea I may actually do that myself.

If you take your rig off pavement, the "suitcase" size muffler will eventually hang up on something.
I replaced mine with an Aero AT2525XL.
Due to the Montero's horrible departure angle my rear bumper and rear-end exhaust is often dragging across the trail, because of this, I also deleted the resonator.
It is certainly louder...
I'd suggest starting with the muffler delete (think low profile), then you can always hack out the resonator in the future.

I did the same thing as Inyo said above. ..deleted both and installed Aero muffler....love it. Louder but more clearance and better all around

Did the pacemaker headers not replace the two "pre cats"? What improvements did you notice?
