Expedition camper built on an Oskosh airport fire truck

I'd much sooner buy a proven rig (MOG, MANN, SCANIA, etc) that has both history and a more generic layout. Just my $0.02.

This truck probably didn't have great off-road ability, but doesn't get much proven than Oshkosh. You'd have to be pretty stupid or unlucky to break it, and worldwide parts support for CAT and Oshkosh isn't half- bad.

At $48k, you could buy it, rebuild it to your own specs and still have money left over compared to a lot of similar options.

but then you have figure out how to pay for fuel, and fuel, and more fuel.

thats from victoria here. the guy is some designer and his house is just as wierd. it is a very odd looking truck when you see it in person. They left for their big trip and didn't even make it out of town and someone cut them off and he ditched it and needed to fix some stuff! He also brought it out to a mudbog our club put on a few years ago and ran it through. 3' of mud didn't even phase it.

I briefly considered buying Draco earlier this year. I visited it at General Auction in Buena Park a few times, took it for a test drive, and spoke at length to its creator, Shahn Torontow.

In the end, I opted instead for a 1968 Unimog 416 DoKa camper.

Without doubt, Draco is exceptionally impressive: that huge 14.6-liter 1,000-pounds-of-torque Caterpillar engine ... luxurious stainless steel, leather, and tile interior ... all the electronic systems, the elevator (which actually is broken now). But it was also purpose-built for a very specific range of requirements, mostly irrelevant to my needs. (It's the perfect vehicle for extended and very comfortable gentle dirt-road travel with a single wheelchair-bound passenger.)

The deal-breakers were its limited off-road capability (no low range, for instance), limited passenger capacity (it seats TWO, and the one bed is tiny), the cost of replacing any of its major components, the 6 mpg HIGHWAY mileage, and its 17.5-ton general unwieldiness.

As an ex forest firefighter, I would have made sure the pump, tank and overhead nozzle came with it. Could skip the foam equipment.

Bad part with these type of big rigs, even my truck couldn't pull ya out if you were stuck.

I've talked to several people lately about how easy it is to rationalize overspending on a build. Even if the features are very mainstream it's still a used camper at resale.
They would have been better off with a Sprinter.

Christian, the salesperson I dealt with at General Auction in Buena Park was Kevin Churchill. Their number is 714-670-8643. That was almost three years ago, but potentially worth a try. He might be able to put you in touch with Draco's new owner.
