Hi Guys, for those of you who asked, I have put together as much as possible the pictures in order of the build. It took two years roughly. The initial concept idea was from a Toyota 200 Series, but that one you can get in from the back, and my one you can't.

more pictures

a few more with paint on this time, I played around with leaving the original body colour and then the new black body, but in the end I thought it woould make the truck look more as one, and not an addition by painting the car as I did in the pictures.

And the end result

I think the design looks in proportion to the main car. It has been designed so that it can be containered anywhere in the world. It is no wider, but is only 2.5ft longer to the back wheels from the original rear bumper. So no massive overhang. As you can see I have angled the rear upwards so that I can tackle uphill and downhill with relative ease.

Very cool build. One question, though:

What does this achieve that the stock cargo area, and a quality roof top tent, do not?

One of my last rigs was a 87 toyota 4runner with lofty shelter, bull bar, snorkel, and a large cargo area that swallowed all my gear. it got 23mpgs, and with a rear locker would be similar to the toyota camper you posted minus the rear doors and some obvious creature comforts...

Not trying to knock your build at all. VERY slick. I have the same questions about something like a JK habitat, etc...

I will post some interior shots over the next couple of days so you can see the answer to your question.. You cannot achieve 5 seats, massive storage drawer, extra 40 litres of fuel in a sealed unit (wait to see pics on this one), 70L water tank, 47L ARB fridge, massive slide out kitchen and sleeping for 2 Adults and 3 kids up top! (although the kids sleep in a ground tent normally) when the trucks a rockin, dont come a knockin......

Thats what you cannot achieve with a stock truck. Believe me I tried it on a trip to the Sahara, which is why I put my efforts into this build. I get 28MPG with my overdrive on a manual gearbox from an L200 pickup (swapped it from the crappy 3 speed Auto). We had a Howling moon roof tent before this and at best even the biggest ones only sleep two nicely.

Excellent! I'd appreciate that! Thank you, sir.

It's raining here in the UK but you probably expected that. When I get sunshine and can open it all up I'll get some nice shots taken. Just waiting for snow now, so I can make some money pulling people out of ditches too.

thats a good build spec. i was referring to the structure. hows it attach to the cut body panels? removable? do you get in the top sleep area from the inside, or outside? where do you stow the ladder? is the rear seating functional? cause my rear seat top is further back than where you cut it.

thanx, i do like this a lot! i think it would be a fun way to fix mine!

here is my ****ty driver rear quarter after a towing accident

The structure is built from 2" aluminium box section, and is attached to the cut body by stainless steel bolts. There is in places, steel welded to add strength across the back where the door has been taken out and from the c pillar across the back too. This build is permanent, nothing is removable at all. I did not want to bugger about taking anything on and off and to keep reducing strength. It is built for many trips. The ladder is in a storage compartment under the spare wheels, which stretches out when needed, and you get in to the bed up top from the outside. There is still 5 usable seats which I need for my lovely kids, who go adventuring with me, and they love the truck.

I could have built a trailer, but after seeing a DVD with a trailer having an accident with two young kids in it, I decided not to. The land rover and trailer jack knifed on a trail going up hill. It didn't make it, and rolled backwards quickly. Thankfully the kids were ok, with little bruising, but I didn't want to risk that. Plus I can still go at motorway speeds without worrying about a trailer fish tailing behind me.

That is one awesome build.

How did you do a full manual conversion,or did you alter the final drive of the box? I'd like to do something that would lower the revs while cruising, currently my 2.8 doing about 2200 at 60mph. I put a switch that locks up the gearbox which makes it a lot better doing the kind of speeds for backroads, although it stays off boost most of the time.

I'd be interested in the gearbox tinkering that you've done. Do you lose some of the pulling power in top gear due to it being slightly below the powerband when it's cruising?
