We are going to have some fun with this and invite professional photographers to help select the images and provide some insight on their choices.
The pro for adventure is Michael Slade, a long-time ExPo member and one of the early inspirations for my love of adventure travel. His articles in 4wd and SUV with the Defender were stunning and epic.
You can only vote for one image in the poll and the winner will be announced this Friday evening.
Image #1
From Michael: Anytime you mix Land-Cruisers and kayaks you know something exciting is afoot.
Not only is there an implied sense of adventure, but the trail, the spinning
tire, the flexed suspension only adds to the sense of eminent excitement. I
also like the composition, giving me a nice chunk of tree, but nice leading
lines with the trail taking me to the vehicle. Cons: the contrast is a little
flat, and the highlight behind the truck takes my eye away from the action, but I'm not going to let those things take me away from a sweet shot.
Image #2
From Michael: Night + storm+ branches bowing from the weight of the falling snow + one-helluva-kick-***-Sportsmobile = adventure. I wouldn't mind seeing the composition take the vehicle a little more off-center, maybe even seeing a little more of the tree, but man-oh-man do I feel cold just looking at this image. Well done.
Image #3
From Michael: I 'feel' like I'm on this trip sitting in the back seat. Dunes, vehicles, a truck full of people, and with the camera angle and p.o.v., I feel like I'm bouncing right along with them. I'm also a sucker for black-and-white, so of course I love this image.
Image #4
From Michael: Um, I don't know where these are taken, but I WANT to go there and DO those things. If the photographer instills a strong reaction from the viewer then they are doing something right. Sean is definitely doing something right.
Edit: Scott picks one of the two and settles on the surfer because even though he doesn't want to be surfing, he does WANT to go there.
Image #5
From Michael: Love them both. A little heavy on the HDR which takes away from the natural feeling, but those scream 'adventure' to me.
Edit: Scott pics the one showing more of that sweet 4Runner
Image #6
From Michael: Johnny makes me want to go there too. Also it doesn't hurt your images when they could be mistaken for a Mercedes-Benz advert. Sweet light, sweet scenery and great use of format and composition. One nit-picky thing I would say is on that long horizontal of the truck, give me a little more exposure on the foreground/truck, and a little less exposure on the hot section of the sky. Otherwise, it's fabulous.
Edit: Michael, you only get to use the fabulous once per decade :sombrero:
Image #7
From Michael: I love this shot, but it's a little heavy on the 'purple'. Another nit to pick is that the subject is looking off of the frame. I'd like to see a little what he's looking at, but the sense of mystery also is nice.
Image #8
From Michael: I really like this shot a lot. The colors, the sand, the leading lines, the textures, everything is very nice. Also very nice presented and photographed as a vertical. This nit in this photo is that line of footprints. To truly scream 'ADVENTURE!' I would have taken those out. As it is, it just loudly insisting 'adventure'. But, I really, really like this image.
Image #9
From Michael: When an image evokes 'puker-factor' in the viewer, something great is going on. I love the drivers p.o.v. and how it puts you 'into' the image. You definitely know there is a great deal of adventure going on here.
Image #10
From Michael: Jack has captured what Land Rover has abandoned in all of their recent marketing materials. The look and feel of this image is quintessential 'Rover'. I love it. I love the p.o.v., saturated color and styling of the image. Very nice. This is what makes people buy a Land Rover.
Edit: Full-disclosure: Jack has done consulting work for Expeditions West but Michael did not know that, so we think it is worth running.
Honorable Mentions:
Scott: I love this shot. The determination in her stance, her arms held away from her sides like a gunslinger and the dirt all over her pants. Future adventurer to be sure!
Scott: While nothing to do with overland travel, this image is captivating for me. There is something about lost treasure and sunken history that stirs the soul.
