Matt,
I'm not familiar with the fairy over drives but the teeth on those gears look very worn- are they not ?

No, thats the syncro. The brass ring has a coned clutch on the inside and those 'teeth' that you see have a trangular shape on them to help the collar slide over it.

weekly check of fluids..
wow that doesn't sound fun or easy
but at least it is on a rig you like
and it gives you a reason to check out other things

Its not that bad. There is an inspection cover inside that you remove and its right there. I'd say probably about as easy as opening your hood and checking your engine oil.

As for the Fairey, they are a lot more durable than people give them credit for. But having the gears to delete it is also a good idea. I know George at RDS sells said kit. I'm just gonna run my OD until it dies. Then switch to roverdrive. Or when I have the extra $$$ laying around.

As the unit is new to you a useful check to make to prevent a roadside repair is to pull the overdrive and look at the coupler spline teeth. If you go to the Roverdrive SX section you'll se the part in one of the comparisons. Its the piece thats left on the end of the transfer box shaft when the overdrive is removed. The spline teeth wear and when they go you have no drive. Mine were half gone on my 109 when I got it.

I now have an engine with the grunt to push a high ratio transfer case which suits my truck better than the overdrives.

I recognize the synchro ring- filed plenty of those smooth on Willy's. The straight cut gear teeth behind the synchro ring was what looks worn but I'm out of my element with Faireys

King ******** still makes quality Witworth tools, or you can try Ebay. Snap on and Proto used to make them but the are a bit hard to come by these days (and can be a bit pricey too).

-Jeff

Cool. I went to their booth at Sema and both the reps had never heard of Witworth tools. I guess I need to speak to a different rep.

I'm being told that Ralph is in capable hands while I'm gone this week! Someone at the office needs to post an image!

What are the brake upgrade options for these?
There are several disc conversion kits that are nice but at considerable cost.

Cheaper is to convert to a SIII pedal tower mounting a servo and a Ford LTD master cyl (There are other alternates from Dodge but all are way cheaper and nicer than the LR item) if you don't have one. Use T-pieces to make a dual ciruit brake system if you don't have it. Now you can mount a set of 3" wide 11" diameter front drums from a 6 cyl/V8/1tonne/101 LR. With a little tweak to the line routing on the front drum to make bleeding easier they are about as good as you can get in drums. You are still running drums with the associated issues but they are plenty strong.
