Please explain to me how the heck your supposed to swap a spring out in the field with a mog? That seems almost impossible..
I have changed broken leaf springs in some nasty places before and its about the same deal. Robbed a Spring off a truck at camp or hotel. Go install it on stranded rig to get it back to a trailer and then put the spring back on the doaner.

Its mostly about having the right tools.

Lift mog with jack.
Support at frame.
Take wheel off.
Unbolt shock
Lower axle.
Remove damaged spring
Install good spring.
Jack axle up
Bolt on shock
install wheel
Lift mog off support.

Realistically you could run the bumpers up on something solid jack up the axle enough to get the wheel off and then lower the axle. Honestly you only need to lift it enough to get the wheel off.

I will try to answer some of your questions.
All the mechanical work in the last year or so, including rebuild cylinder head, has been done by LinDen Engineering in Golden, Colorado. The body and frame work has been done in Mexico. During the restoration all of the rust has been removed from the frame and body, the roof of the driver’s cabin has been completely replaced. There is a little bit more room in the cabin than in a regular single cab 416, since this truck started its life as a DoKa (crew cab). The original owner cut off the rear half of the cabin, but left few extra inches behind the seats.
The springs you see attached to the side of the frame are spare springs, in the 9 years on the road (and off road) the owner had to replace one broken spring back in Africa.
The Unimog is owned by a couple from Germany. They have been traveling with this Unimog for the last 9 years. Right now they are on their way to Alaska. They would like to sell their truck after returning from Alaska in the late fall of this year.

Depending on the condition of the truck when it returns from Alaska and the condition of my wallet over the coming months, I could be interested. Esp. if it's in really good condition.

Though, as a 'mog newbie, and a Diesel newbie, I've got a lot I would have to bone up on between then and now in order to be able to make a proper determination.

One thing about the Unimog community is that they are extremely helpful, and you don't get any of the macho, competitive attitude that happens with some off-roading groups. You'll find lots of people willing to help with the Mog part, and some of us are pretty knowledgeable about the camper part, too.

If you have a question come up, just post it and we'll get you an answer. You can also send private messages to me or other Mog camper owners--just check out some of the topics in the "Unimog and MB Truck" forum to identify who we are--and I'm pretty sure any of us would be glad to talk to you by phone to answer any of your questions.

It'd also be worthwhile to join onto the Unimog Mail List at:

http://tx4x4.com/mailman/listinfo/mog_tx4x4.com,

which will get you access to a good group of very experienced Moggers who'd welcome your questions.

And depending where you are, think about making plans to go to Sheridan, Oregon (about an hour southwest of Portland) the third weekend in August for the annual Northwest Mogfest. Mogs of every shape, size and purpose, along with guys who can answer every question you could possibly think of.

As for this particular 416 camper, I imagine the sense of the group is that it's old school German, somewhat dated and a little cramped in exchange for being nice and short, and that it's the real deal at a reasonable asking price. There's certainly much that would have to be checked over--and we can probably get you help doing that if you want it--but I don't think anyone would discourage you from giving it more thought.

Best,

Lower price, immediate sale

I just got an e-mail from the owner of the Unimog. He is ending his trip early, so the Unimog is available for immediate sale! He had also lowered the price down to $35,000.-. Right now he is in a small town Lillooet, north east of Vancouver.
In previous posts there was a question, if there is anything wrong with the Unimog. As far as I know, it is in a good shape. It has been gone trough twice in the last year by LinDen engineering here in Golden, Colorado. That is a shop specializing in Unimog, Pinzgauer, Land Rover and Volvo trucks. There is only one drawback, and that is its cruising speed of about 45 Mph.
Anybody seriously interested please p.m. me on this forum. Thank you, Tomas

It might drive a little nicer without the 14.5 tires. My camper mog has 12.5's and I once swapped the 14.5's from my other 416 and it really bogged down. I normally cruise at 55mph and it holds pretty good on all but the steepest hills. With the 14.5's I had a hard time getting to 50mph even on the flats.

My fast truck has really fast axles so its already a little tall on the gears, the 14.5's just pushe it over the edge. If this truck has normal axles then maybe it'll spin the 14.5's a little easier.

Another update. Klaus (the owner) is right now on his way from Lillooet (B.C.) to Inuvik, the most northern point of Canada. If there is anybody seriously interested, he is willing to set up a meeting point and show the Unimog. Anybody with interest or questions about the Unimog can contact Klaus directly, his e-mail address is: eukgabele@yahoo.com
