I like the design, however the sprinter/promaster is somewhat narrow. A custom body would give a few inches more which make a difference in such a small area.

Yeah you could push them to the wall. You could also lay them down in a pull out.

That is a lot of internal volume to give up for 2 bikes!

If you are doing a custom box I would create a storage area on the roof and lay them flat, loosen and turn the handle bars
Locked lift lid done.

Tougher and lighter than most other choices, usually pretty cheap too. The box is aluminium. And the rear door is huge. 4WD conversions are common for the Ford Econoline chassis.
