If I routinely needed the power of the 3.5/5.0 and their payload packages, then I'd sooner take a 6.2 gasser 250.
I'm still waiting for a chance to tow my 5000# trailer in the mountains with my 3.7 NA and "34s" (but really they are 33) and if it does the job, an XLT 301a 3.3 or 2.7 are lead replacement trucks if/when truck prices come down. A 2.7 PP truck for higher payload and heavier axle aren't needed, but if the price is right and one optioned correctly comes up, maybe.
I have the 7.3 with Tremor package and as long as I drive reasonably I average right around 12, which is the same mpg's I got with my 2005 Ram with the Cummins.
Yeah the cyclones have to rev. Once you accept that fact and you realize it's fine to have it running at 5k up an incline, it's alright. The 3.3L now comes with a 10spd. The engine isn't available on the longer wheelbase models. I'm sure it would do the job if you are willing to rev it. If you don't like the way the computer selects throttle opening and gears, there are fixes for that.
The tune came with the tuner, as well as allowing me to correct for tire size, it fixed the horrible throttle lag that comes standard with Ford's programming, and the transmission shifting got a bit better (selected firmer shifts)
