F150 - 2.7L vs 3.5L vs 5.0L

My opinion is no

Catch cans are needed on the trucks with turbos and intercoolers due to the sudden change in air Temps, that produces moisture

mirroring what others said, 2.7 doesn't have the max tow or max payload available. It has a 2.7 specific payload package.

for the 3.5 2017 was the first year for both port and direct injection. It looks like 2018 was the first year the 2.7 got direct and port injection. From what I have seen the 5.0 also began using port and direct injection in 2018 as well.

Maybe worth noting, 2021 is the first year that the 5.0 has cylinder deactivation

I'm still waiting for a chance to tow my 5000# trailer in the mountains with my 3.7 NA and "34s" (but really they are 33) and if it does the job, an XLT 301a 3.3 or 2.7 are lead replacement trucks if/when truck prices come down. A 2.7 PP truck for higher payload and heavier axle aren't needed, but if the price is right and one optioned correctly comes up, maybe.
A new custom multi leaf pack is probably better than Ford's heavier single spring, and I'd be changing shocks anyway.

If I routinely needed the power of the 3.5/5.0 and their payload packages, then I'd sooner take a 6.2 gasser 250.

I have the 7.3 with Tremor package and as long as I drive reasonably I average right around 12, which is the same mpg's I got with my 2005 Ram with the Cummins.

The 3.3L now comes with a 10spd. The engine isn't available on the longer wheelbase models. I'm sure it would do the job if you are willing to rev it. If you don't like the way the computer selects throttle opening and gears, there are fixes for that.

That's low......my early 2004 (305/555) 3500 on 37s was high 18s

2005 trucks had an inefficient piston bowl, odd nozzle holes, and poor injection event cycle

Yeah the cyclones have to rev. Once you accept that fact and you realize it's fine to have it running at 5k up an incline, it's alright.
Not tons of steep climbs around me and with the travel restrictions we haven't gone far enough to experience a long climb.
I'm running a 91 octane canned tune and stock gears with the six speed. 91 is so fricken expensive though running 87 in a 2.7 would likely be the way I lean.

What did the tune get you that was worth the price plus gas? If you really need a power boost (particularly in the mountains), then 2.7 for sure.

The tune came with the tuner, as well as allowing me to correct for tire size, it fixed the horrible throttle lag that comes standard with Ford's programming, and the transmission shifting got a bit better (selected firmer shifts)
I had put the stock tune back on at the end of 19 when I tried to sell the truck (thank God it didn't sell, I wasn't ready to buy in early 2020) and it drove so sluggish and shifted at the wrong points due to tire size.
Since the truck only sees like 10k km a year now it's been less painful on the gas

You couldn't keep the good parts of the tune and adjust it to run on 87 octane? What tune is it?
