We're Back

We're back from our Great Lakes trip. I'll try to get caught up on PMs and emails. The rig upgrades and new additions worked out well. After I finish unpacking and going through notes I'll post a better trip report. Thanks to everyone that offered help and advice.

I'll go through my fuel receipts and double check my math, but the rough numbers are as follows. The overall trip was about 4200 miles and we averaged 9.2 mpg. This included about 300 miles in 4wd. On the long highway run home the last two days with water tanks half empty our mileage was about 10mpg. The truck is still pretty new so I'm hoping it will continue to break in and mpg will get better.

I still need to get the odometer and speedo flashed to account for the 41 inch tires. My local guy tried, but it's still off about 16.5%. This made figuring out my actual speed a constant math challenge. After a while I made a cheat sheet and taped it to the dash. We're usually at or below the posted speed limits so this wasn't a big deal. Calculating fuel range was also a challenge.

The new tire/wheel setup handled good on the highway and reasonably well offroad even at max pressure. Steering was very good. Once I add onboard air I'll be able to lower pressures and improve offroad/backroad ride quality. The only place I was unhappy was on the poor quality/broken slab sections of the interstate. Ride quality was very rough in the rear. I'll be looking to upgrade the rear suspension setup before the next long run. The new upper boxes have helped the instability in cross winds I experienced last year. Still need to cut speed down, but the white knuckle moments are now few and far between.

Bob; Can you post just one picture of your truck being used to its full off road ability. I am trying to tell the wife that we need to do the same thing to our F 450. She ask where yours can go that ours can't. I know the differance, but she needs convincing. She said yours is now even taller and will stop you from going under alot of limbs. She does understand the sand off roading problem. She said we wouldn't go in the sand then. Please help with this problem. How did your justify to your other half??

Not sure I have THE photo that will make your case. My rig is tall (12' to top of AC unit), but not much taller than many standard truck camper setups. However, with a 176" wheelbase, lift, and MPTs my turning radius and breakover angle are actually pretty good. The next addition will be an air compressor so I can soften the ride on unimproved roads.

My wife gets very nervous when the road narrows or gets rough. The last thing on my mind is to stop at max articulation and take pictures. Many of my mods (lift, MPTs, etc.) were added to help her overcome this nervousness. The more she gets bounced around and/or has to watch me self recover the less likely she is to go next trip. With that said, I'd like to take the rig on some local fire roads and find out where my boundaries really are. Will try and snap a few pics then. Good luck with your sales job.

We are all waiting for a trip report. How did you get 300 miles in 4 x 4? BLM land? Are the tires and wheels worth the rough ride for 4500 miles to 4 x 4 for 300?

His truck and camper should be about 24 foot without the spare. I hope this helps if you needed the info now. He can let me know if I am wrong. We have the same truck and similar campers.

We spent a bunch of miles on unimproved national forest roads and logging roads in MN and MI, as well as rural dirt roads visiting family in PA. I probably could have done much of it in 2WD, but I never like to find out the hard way.

As far as ride quality, I don't think the new wheels/tires feel much different than the OEM wheels/tires. Since I never hauled the camper fully loaded before the lift kit I don't have a true stock point of reference.

How have your under bed boxes worked out? Did you do anything special in the box interior. I need to order two custom shapes.
I ended up over 27'. I can put two good size boxes behind the rear wheels.

The boxes are great. They provide so much easy to reach storage it's hard to imagine day-to-day camp life without them. We ordered a set of four (36" wide x 20" tall x 24" deep). The rear boxes hang off the flatbed. The front boxes are also supported underneath by 2x2 steel tubes welded to the flatbed. We use the rear for light stuff (boots, folding stairs, etc.) and the front for heavy stuff (pots/pans, bottled water, tools, recovery gear, etc.).

Mike, thanks for posting the latest pics. My camera took a dive and the kids insist I wait until Christmas to see if Santa will bring me a new one.
