Favorite Budget Tires?

I haven't seen them mentioned in this thread, but the Sumitomo Encounter A/T looks like it should be a good value tire. Falken is a Sumitomo brand, and the Encounter A/T is very similar to the Falken Wildpeak AT3W, with deep tread, 3PMS rating, and good reviews. I owned a set of Falken AT3Ws on my GMC and was pleased with the performance on-road and off, but the price of the Falkens is right up there with BFG KO3s now.

I considered the Cooper Discoverer ATs at Walmart due to the price and being U.S. made, but I wasn't too keen on Walmart installation. Maybe Walmart is just as good, but I like the way my local Discount Tire does things and has treated me through the years. I decided to give the Sumitomo's a shot and purchased a set in LT275/70r18 for my F150 for under $900 OTD and will have them installed next week.

My Cherokee has Discovery AT's, I haven't had it off road yet, only got it a couple months ago, but it did snow, 7 inches, I'd give them a "C+/B-" for traction in the snow, not bad, not the best either. I doubt I'd ever put anything but KO's on my F-150.

I ran them on my last truck, I'd give them a solid C for snow.

I was dragging the old BFG's out of the barn when they started slipping belts. When the third one went I went to Falken AT3's and never looked back. Much better in snow, they were still on the truck when I sold it... and I put them (AT3w) on the truck that replaced it.

Note: If you buy tires from WalMart.com you don't have to have them install. You can take them to any shop or do it yourself. ( If you have the equ. )

No personal experience with then but I know a lot of guys on the F150 pages really like Kenda tires.

I have a set of Kenda RT's. Traction is great. They're not too noisy. They throw gravel worse than the other tires I've run in recent years. I'd buy them again.

I have a set of NanKang AT tires 285/75-17 on my 4WD Van. My tire wholesaler had a GREAT Price on em 3 years ago and they were the highest rated Budget AT tire by 4WD Magazine at that time.

20K miles in they run great, low/no noise, no tread separation or tire problems. I will easily get another 20K-30K miles out of these tires.

I did have one tire when new that took double the weight to balance as the others (2 oz or less). My wholesaler replaced that tire and the replacement tire balanced perfect like all the others.

90% of my van use is on-road. Have not got stuck anywhere when off-road. Van runs 75-80 MPH all day with a smooth ride and no tire noise. Pretty good considering the van is leaf spring 1 ton 4WD van. The Nankang's I have are E rated.

Best Cheap Asian Made Tires I have ever had.

Put a second set of NanKang's on my daughter's 1988 BMW 325IX AWD.

Same result. They run great!

Would buy again!
