FG Brakes

What are FG owner's experiences with the drum brake wear and replacement? I am inspecting/servicing for another long trip and I can't find any brake lining thickness specs. My FG has 24K miles on the chassis.

How long have FG owners gone between brake lining replacement?

Thanks
Tom

Brakes

Hi Tom,

Our experience so far: we have 65,000 on our original brakes and we just had them checked and we still have more than half our lining left.

On a different note, we had our "low vacuum" light come on and after two Mitsubishi mechanics and several Mitsubishi representatives couldn't help us, our local mechanic dianosed a leak in the exhaust brake vacuum chamber. Just keep an eye open if you have a similar problem.

Are you having an issue with your brakes? Maybe we can help.

Tom,

We're at 25k and still fine on shoe thickness.

Doesn't sound like much but we are carrying around a decent percentage of the world's total mass, so we're pleased with that wear rate.

The relevent pages of the service manual for the brake system for current model Fusos is here: http://www.hackneys.com/mitsu/docs/fuso-brakes.pdf

The spec you are looking for is:

Thanks guys...

No problems with the brakes, I am just doing the before trip maintenance checks.

I did check the inspection holes and the lining looked thick enough but the info in Doug's message confirms it.

I did order the FUSO service CD too. Expensive but much less than the books!

At the 114,000 mile service on our 93 the mechanic said we have close to 75 percent remaing.

Truck and camper weighed about 10600 out of 11600 gvw.

We always use the exhaust brake and don't drive very fast.

Our 2004 only has 30,000 miles.

Btw, we always following manual recommendation to warm up engine until temp guage needle moves and we always idle for 3 minutes before shut down after high speed runs (sometimes it's a pain) but the mechanic was very impressed with engine / turbo condition at the 114,000 mile service.

There's a fuso dealer with a branch in Portland, Or and Seattle, Wa area that seemed pretty friendly, knowlegeable, etc.

We stopped in the Portland branch 2 years ago
