Finally got my Surly Troll loaded up for an overnight trip!

Hey Folks,

Couple of months ago I started piecing together a Surly Troll frame as my new touring bike. The frame design promises a great compromise between mountain bike and touring mule. Some of the important components are: Tubus rack, Schwalbe Marathon plus tires, 36 spoke wheels, disc brakes, geared for climbing and a suspension fork.

Here are my first impressions:
It's feels nimble. Almost too much for a touring bike! But I'm sure I will like that feature on the trails :)
Other than the derailer coming loose... everything went fine and the bike left a positive impression.

In any case, my tour took me to Salt Spring Island. The first 35km are off traffic on nearly flat bike trails (see pic for map) to the ferry at Swartz Bay. A 35 minute crossing to Fulfort Harbour was uneventfull. Out of the harbour awaits you a 2km climb that makes your heart pumping :) After that it's just another fairly easy 10km to Ruckle Prov. Park. The oldest still in operation farm in British Columbia. Watch out for farm animals when you come into the park from a nice fast downhill! In the past I reached 70km/h :) Setting up my camp just a couple of feet from the beach was the days highlight .surly01.jpgsurly02.jpgsurly04.jpgsurly05.jpgsurly06.jpgsurly07.jpgsurly08.jpgsurly09.jpg

Anyone coming through our area should certainly do this route, you will not regret it!
