First Trip with Kamparoo trailer

We got out for our first trip with our new to us 2004 Kamparoo Weekender trailer. This is the first trailer I have pulled with our Cherokee and it pulled great. I basically set the cruise at 62-65mph. We were meeting friends out at Superstition OHV area, west of El Centro. Our trip starts at about 300' above sea level and climbs to about 4200' and then back down to around 200'. We hardly noticed it behind us and still got just over 15mpg. That rocked!

I did not get to try pulling it on the trails as I have not gotten the Lock 'n Roll setup yet but it should do well. We did find out it holds up well to winds in the 25-35mph range as it was blowing from late afternoon on Saturday and was still blowing when we left at 9am Sunday.

Here are a couple pictures with more located at, http://gallery.lisaandmike.org/superstition308

AWESOME! Yeah i heard everyone in the low desert was sand blasted this weekend! Howd the tent hold up? So nice having a full kitchen setup. That's such a nice unit! Im jealous of that sink setup! Watch out setting your cruise at 65mph... the CHP don't likey that speed with a trailer.

Sweet. Looks like a great set up. I really like these clamshell tent trailers. Nice to be off the ground with a full size bed and a hard floor inside.

Now we just need more time off to get out and enjoy them more.

Our friends Ali and Michelle brought theirs to DV for the New Years run. This was the first time we had seen a Kamparoo up close. We were envious because, like your trip, the wind blew...and they with the nice vestibule could easily hang out there out of the elements.

Congratulations...you will have soooo much fun with it!

Actually the tent held up great with the wind. It was blowing hard and there were a few gusts my buddy thought his motorhome was going to blow over but we just rode it out. Packing it up was a little challenging as it wanted to blow the loose material out of where it needed to go. With my wife and I, we got it closed up in less then 5 minutes. The sink and on board water supply was nice. :D

I have found 62-65 works fairly well. Fast enought to not get stuck behind 18 wheelers but slow enough that most everyone else still passes us. Basically I try not to stand out and it works well.

Next trip, the Mojave Road mid March.

were's the swing gate tire carrier??

Not sure what you mean? If for the Cherokee, I am not planning a swing style carrier. The spare will end up on a custom built roof rack I will do later this year. The bumper I have been building was the front one. Pics posted in the Jeep forum.

It looks like you had a great shake down trip. I was at the TDS Safari on Saturday and made it to Superstition OHV area on Saturday evening. We played in the mud hills and then made it up the hill to San Diego just after dark. Is there anything on the trailer that you would like to change? It looks like the perfect set up to me. I anxious to see how it works off road. Another write soon? :punk03:

Sounds like you had a good time. It was cool that for the first time since going to Superstition (which has been about 20 years) I actually drove something other then a dirt bike/ATV UP Sand Dam. WooHoo!!! We drove the Cherokee up Sand Dam. It was cool.

As for the trailer, we are really happy with it. About the only thing that would be nice is if the door openning on the kitchen slide out was about an inch taller, so it would take one of the newer Coleman stoves without having to take the feet off of it. I am going to make some different feet that stick on.

Our Mojave Road trip is March 15th and I will definitely post a report and pictures.

Most excellent!!! We're enjoying '02 Kamparoo as well; it tows remarkably well on road and off road. Yes, I've put it through its paces and the Tregg receiver makes for a smooth operation. You'll love the LockNRoll setup.

Of course the mods started as soon as the trailer came home. Feel free to use any ideas from the pics!!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Once again, congrats!!

Hi Ali, nice pictures of your Kamparoo. Looks like you have definitely put it through its paces.

Curious, what size tires are you using on yours? Did you put the lift blocks on the axle or did it come that way? Can't wait to get ours out again. :wavey:

Mine came with the lift blocks and slightly larger 30x9.50x15 tires. I had reservations on what appears to be a cheesy setup but so far I haven't run into any issues. I do think, however, that I'll change the slipper springs to a traditional set of eye/shackle arrangement. This is purely from a parts accessible point of view.
