Fishy FJ?

I wrote the seller about this truck yesterday...looked nice in the one pic but I was confused as the seller wrote 1989 and it appears to be a 60 not 62.
With the steel wheels and aussie style side mirrors I thought maybe an import and '89s somewhere else in the world got round headlights...maybe even a diesel???

This is the response I got from the seller...Does this smell?

Hello,

Sorry for the delay but I was busy with my new job!My name is Dianne I am emailing you regarding the 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ62 that I have for sale.
The car is in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever, never been involved in any accidents. The interior looks great (NO SMOKING). It has 180,537 miles, automatic transmission, 8 - Cyl ,VIN:jt3fj62g7k1107357 , I have a clear and clean title for it, no liens or loans ready to be signed and notarized on your name..
I'm selling my son's car, who died in Iraq two months ago and I want to get rid of it asap because the sight of it makes me think of him often and often and the pain is too great. Put yourself in my shoes and you'll do the same (selling the car of your dead son, no offense) !!!
As you probably noticed, the final price that i want for this car is $3,090 if you will buy it today or tomorrow.

For more pictures here is a link to the car's photo gallery:http://img529.imageshack.us/g/61924549.jpg/
Let me know where are you located and any other details you need about it.

Thank you,
Dianne

Looks to be right hand drive, perhaps she is just confused on the whole FJ60/FJ62 thing. I'd ask her a few more questions, then check out the VIN- it may tell you lots of info. Maybe a local expo person in the Bay area can check it out for you?

This ones a little tough! She says she want to sell it asap, but her son died two months ago. I know the car market in Vegas is tough, and the truck doesn't have the stock dash or engine, so it could make it harder to sell to the average Joe. With these changes, it doesn't seem impossible the grill couldn't have been switched for an earlier model one. It looks like you are probably within a 4 hour or so drive from there. Usually if the seller will give you there phone number and location it is legit. If not, I run. If I was in the maket for one, I would definitely call her, grab some cash, and make the drive to check it out, but am suspicious enough not to send any money first.
Looks like a clean, rust free truck.

it's worth a 2nd look.

i buy/sell a lot on craigslist and more than once, i've gotten some fishy requests. i keep a response on file: "CASH ONLY, LOCAL SALE ONLY, OR ******** OFF." the guy had told me he was out of town til next weekend, but he can send me a money order now to hold the item, then come pick it up when he returns. his contact number was international. it sounded way too fishy.

as it turned out, he worked out on an oil rig in the Gulf and their provided cell phones are GPS based and use an international carrier (or something to that effect).

he replied to me, "hey man you need to not be so paranoid... [then explains his situation]." he was 100% legit and a great guy. :)

Yes...I want to be optimistic...but when people say "pay me today or tomorrow"??? And the pictures look out of place for Vegas??? Maybe they are old...we will see...

RHD? That car is clearly a LHD car. Perhaps the seller swapped out photos?

I would be skeptical. Could be a good deal, but be on guard. The VIN is a 62, but has round headlights. It does have the a440 auto tranny, which would make it a 62. Round headlight conversion perhaps?

Carfax shows it has lived it's entire life in South Carolina, with the last record on 08/14/2007.

Some of the odd phrasing is enough to make me suspicious.

"My name is Dianne I am emailing you regarding ..."
""...with no need for additional repairs, ..."
"...ready to be signed and notarized on your name."
"...the final price that i want for this car is $3,090 if you will buy it today or tomorrow."

Maybe english isn't their first language or something, but I've seen too many overseas scammers.

if it's the "dead person scam" which it sounds like, the next step should be to send money to a third party broker for holding, they will ship the vehicle and when you receive and approve the condition, the broker will release the funds to them.........haha
why do the scams always locate the vehicle in Las Vegas?

I am still waiting to see if the seller responds to my email requesting to see the vehicle in person...but it won't be "today or tomorrow"...
