FJ40 Ham Radio Install

I did a quick write up on my Ultimate Air tank installation. It turned out the bracket for the co2 tank was a good spot for the radio installation as well. I'll move some of the pictures over here as I don't like linking to other sites.

I use my FT8900 in both my FJ40 and my Dodge truck I drive everyday. I wanted to be able to move the radio between vehicles easily and quickly. I bought two quick release Yaesu brackets, a separate antenna and mount for each vehicle, and an extra power supply cable. The quick release brackets are very well made. In my opinion they open up more mounting positions than the regular brackets because you don't need acess to the sides of the unit to secure the side screws of the bracket For my FJ40 application it allows me to easily pull the radio out to access the data port for programming and antenna plug aside from the ability to move the unit from one vehicle to the other.

I would recommend the quick release mount for pretty much any application. They are a little spendy, but worth it IMO.

I ran the faceplate extension to the dash on the FJ. I'll get pics of that later. I also ran the external speaker extension that came with it. I'm going to mount an external speaker on the rollbar somewhere convenient. I'm going to add a splitter so I can either use the external speaker or earbud headphones. Right now I'm just using the earbud headphones and they work great. I drove from Benson to Tucson and was able to listen and transmit perfectly and my vehicle is very loud. The splitter would make it convenient to switch back and forth between external audio and headphone audio, or have both at the same time. As it is now I have to have the earbuds in or I have no external audio unless I pull the ext. speaker plug on the unit. I'll put the splitter behind the drivers seat so I can get to it easily.

I am also going to make a simple desktop style bracket to hold the removable faceplate, adding another external speaker on a longer cord, and making a faceplate extension cable to extend the extension. Basically this will allow me to have a "base unit" outside the vehicle. I would love to be able to sit down and get comfy in the camp chair and be able to test out repeaters and see what I can reach with simplex.

I'm using a dual band 1/2 (2m) wave antenna on a Diamond K400 lipmount. In the pictures I have a SBB-1 flexible antenna installed. I usually just have it there to have something on there when I have my 1/2 wave on my truck.

Anyway, just another install that hopefully will help someone out with ideas.

I came across this post I made a while back. I have done a lot more installs for friends and family. Again, for the Yaesu radios I highly recommend using the quick release bracket MMB-60. You can mount the unit solid in very tight spaces and still be able to quickly remove it for programming or moving to another vehicle. For me to do installs for people I require they get the bracket.

Yup... Great bracket... Too bad Yaesu discontinued them.

You can still find them in obscure places that never sold out.

I got 3 of them from an obscure source on the web, a cop shop website of all places.

They should bring them out again, only this time, include two vehicle mounts, and one radio mount. I had to buy 3 of them just to get what I needed.

I used two sets of the tabs on my yaesu. My CB has a vehicle mount attached to it, and it piggy backs the 8800 when I need CB in the truck. Not often needed, which is why this mount is great!
