FJ60 vs FJ62 axles

I just bought a set of FJ62 axles for my FJ40 and noticed that there is an extra gusset under the front axle. Are ther any other differances between the two. I may just rebuild them and put them under my 60.

Gear ratio in the diffs. I think the spring perches are slightly wider too. The rear has sway bar where the 60 didn't. Diff flanges are different than the earlier 60s. I think that is about it.

The later 60 series rear axles have the mounts for the sway bar, but not the sway bar itself. Otherwise, Eric has the differences. The front 62 housing is a desirable upgrade. The rear is the same.

The sheet metal at the brakes vent air to the diskc as well. Was there a stock gear ratio for the automatic? I sure would like taller gears for my 60.

It isn't sheet metal, it's fiber material of some type rivited to the backing plate.

If you want taller gears you need an H55f 5 speed transmission which has an overdrive.

The 62 front axle also has more caster built in due to the steeper driveline caused by the automatic.

In some cases, a cut and turn is not necessary when going with a SOA using a 62 axle.

Oohh, I like what i'm hearing, Since I already have an overdrive (nv4500) I'd like taller gears in the diff. but if they are the same I'll have to live with it.

Since I have not cut my stock SOA in my 60 the 62 axles sounds like just what I need.

It certainly has a better pinion angle when installed by enough degrees to see without measuring, but does it have a different caster angle relative to the stock perches? It looks the same to me.

I'm defenently installing the 62 axles in my 60, I'll also weld in a 3 point anti axle roll to the rear to keep the axle wrap out

You are correct. It has more pinion angle and the caster is the same as the 60 axle. However when doing a SOA, you don't get negative caster when rotating the pinion up like you would in a 40 or 60 housing.

I'm running a 62 axle under my 45 SOA Troopy. I have not cut/turn my axle as there is no need to. I'm still running + caster since the pinion angle did not change much.

Something I noticed that I'm not sure was asked or addressed, but 62's are a 4.11 ratio and 60's are a 3.7 ratio. I'm looking for some 4.11's to put in my 60.....
