Fold out RTT with hard shell when closed?

I'm wondering if anyone makes a "regular" fold out RTT that, when closed, is in a hard shell type "case"?

  1. I want the opened size of a "regular" RTT that hinges out to open
  2. I want the small footprint of those "regular" tents when closed
  3. I like the hard shell RTTs simple open/close without a lot of fuss over tucking & strapping/zipping

Are there any RTTs that are some hybrid tests that check these check boxes?

(to be more specific I'd love to find a "hard shell" RTT that fits on a short bed Tacoma (or even a Tundra) bed without overhang, and not above cab height and that opens out to a full bed size.)

80" long... same as most hard shells. Yes, the fold out make it bigger - great - but the closed footprint is too large.

Free spirit maybe? I know they have a hard shell but I’m not sure if it’s a clamshell style open.

Yeah, that's pretty darned close to what I'm looking for... The small is 60”L x 52”W.
Still would like something that didn't need tucking when closing up... a lazy sot I am I guess...

Why would anyone want a hardshell RTT and "foldout" problems? I'm not playing devils' advocate here, and I'm not trying to be rude. Genuinely curious.

I thought the beauty of a hardshell is that it doesn't have "foldout" problems (getting wet, long dry out time, difficult to put away, sacrifice bedding storage space for canvas storage space, etc.). The beauty of a foldout tent is the awesome canvas smell (assuming that it is canvas), more room, and...I dunno what.

Maybe a hardshell/foldout would fare better amongst branches? Please, no flaming. I'm wondering why this idea is appealing.

I DO prefer a hard shell for the reasons you state, BUT I want something that will fit on a Tundra/Tacoma bed without extending past the tailgate (much) and not above the cab roofline when closed. I was imagining something that combines the best of both... I guess I'm thinking something that retains as much of the benefit of the hardshell with the small footprint of a folded up "standard".

maybe I need to play with a little origami...

I'm in the market for a new RTT to replace my Baroud. It's a good tent but I have noticed the iKampers.

That's why I'm curious. There may be a benefit to these new RTTs that I haven't noticed. Currently I'm considering an aluminum-shell RTT.
