Follow up: Cheap outside thermometer (temporary)

Well, after considering a number of options, I just went with the cheapo, $9-at-Checker-auto solution for my thermometer dilemma.

Doesn't look that great but it works for now, which is what matters. Actually, this one is nice because it has a nice, wide base that makes it easy to mount. I did find out the hard way that you can't "hang" a little gauge like this off of a vertical piece of velcro, it just won't stay put. It has to be on a horizontal surface in order to stay there. I also tried putting it on top of the dashboard but it got too hot up there and I couldn't see the LCDs.

As you can see from this location, it blocks some pretty important idiot lights (AT temp gauge among others) which is why this is strictly temporary.

Ugly wire goes into the door panel and then under the hood.

From there it goes under the hood. The manual that came with it says to mount the sensor near the door but I wanted it up near the bumper. 100mph tape keeps the excess wire in check.

Since I don't have the factory fog lights I mounted the sensor in the fog light hole, and secured the wire with more 100mph tape.

So far it seems to keep pretty good temperature, at least it reads about the same as my wife's factory thermometer in her Grand Vitara. About the only time I noticed it's 'off' is if I park in the sun. I think the whole bumper heats up and that gives the sensor a falsely high reading. But once I start driving it cools off somewhat.

Anyway, it will work until I can get a proper gauge in a pillar-mounted pod.

Check out the local big rig truck shops. Most guage companies have an outside/inside guage that fits in a standard guage hole. Some have clocks in them as well. Powered by the vehicle electrical system and uses a remote sensor for outside temp. Some also have ice alarms that can be turned off.

I have been looking for a good high quality external gauge for some time. Any links would be appreciated if you know of any.
