I agree that there is a market niche (a very small one) for simple, rugged vehicles without all the fancy accessories. I just doubt that Toyota will pursue it. There's more money to be made in chasing after the big bucks.

IMO that's where a company like Mahindra can come into the market and make a name for itself.

...99.99999% of the other buyers would simply say "why should I pay $35k for something with cloth seats and a manual tranny, when for the same price I can get this blinged-out domestic with leather seats, sat nav and a killer stereo?"

Most new domestic trucks at the lowest option will be a premium on that price.

And can you imagine a spouse looking at the rubber floor mats and the cheap cloth seats and saying "you paid how much? For THAT?"
Absolutely. I imagine many families with young children would certainly opt for the easy-clean interior. Neighbor's wife just bought a brand-new Sequoia off the lot and insisted on cloth. Quite a few of us Arizonans well-prefer a cooler cloth seat to the burning leather.

But the poverty-pack LC would still be priced thousands above domestic trucks and SUVs that are not poverty packs. You (and maybe a dozen other people) would see the rugged design and the simple components and drool. 99.99999% of the other buyers would simply say "why should I pay $35k for something with cloth seats and a manual tranny, when for the same price I can get this blinged-out domestic with leather seats, sat nav and a killer stereo?"

You don't want to know what I paid for my FJ Cruiser because I bought it within 4 months of it being released...:(

The 70 series troopy is still offered new in most of the world and I think has an appeal to trades people and those who work in rugged / snowy terrain. Look at the success mercedes has had with their sprinter. Those things are useless in the snow and on the weekend. I would be in line to buy one...

I have what the doctors have dubbed an "unhealthy" relationship with the 70 series.

I think we are about to have another shift in the Automotive world. Detroit is dead. The new "big three" are Japanese and beginning to act like it. The new decent 'foreign cars' are coming from Korea. Soon we are going to be flooded by super cheap cars from China and in time they will be the quality cars and the junk will come from Africa.

Love having fun 😊 in the 🌞 by the ⛵ and the ⏳
came across these excellent examples.

I'll take it! Absolutely perfect! I love it! Drool! I guess us guinea pigs in Kanukistan will have to wait for a few more years and then we can sell you our 70 series diesels that we can bring in (15 years +) but have to wait for the 25+ year rule for the USA. I'll be ready for another one by then so I will probably sell my 73 series to help pay for the import. Any takers?

I hate this damn website. I was perfectly happy building up a sweet volvo turbo wagon with all the toys for auto-cross. My first car in the 24 years I have been driving. Now I have been reading 70 series threads again and the train has de-railed. Looks like I am in for my seventh landcruiser. I guess a seventy for the seventh would be appropriate... As a canuck I can get a 3B so probably less speeding tickets... Need a tetnus booster for the bodywork though.

Toyota should at least offer those truck through specialtly channel, commercial equipement dealers and such. Sell 1-2 trim and let the dealer accessories them. I know they will be expensive but at least available. I'm sure they would sell a couple hundred per year at least in Canada, imagine in the usa.

There you go, right here in Québec, parking lot full of them, unfortunately no ABS, no air bag, so not road worthy, they are mine truck you cannot get them on the road.

arrrrgggh In BC at least they have the decency to put them behind a chain link fence. Having them right out in the open like that is practically entrapment.

Yeah, just will be again soon looking for 5on150mm OEM poverty-pack rims...

I'm pretty sure they are split rims. I took dozens of them to the scrapyard two winters ago 'cause I couldn't find homes for them.
