For Fellow 70-Series Lovers

I took this picture while driving through Yellowstone last May. Maybe a member here?

I was all excited while taking pictures of the LC while everybody else were excited and taking pictures of the buffalo that were walking around the other side of the van. They thought I was weird for taking pictures of the LC instead of the buffalo. :D

I think the 7x would sell the best as a contractor vehicle. Toyota has no work van, and I believe they have just come out with a stripped down "work" version of the Tundra. I can see many contractors out buying a troopy to haul around equipment.

I agree with some here who say that the number of general public willing to buy a 7x may be low, but I also think there is a market amongst the plumber/electrician/carpenter/etc crowd. These are the people who want something reliable and robust for their everyday job. This is where Toyota can make their money with the 7x Land Cruiser.

I also think Toyota should bring over the HiAce.

Just my $.02. :D

Really gents, it wasn't that hard at all to find my 70. They pop up on IH8MUD all of the time.

With 1984 being the first year, you should be able to import a 70 series troopy from OZ for about $15,000 or so, including a trip there to get it and make sure it makes it on the boat.

Now...a cheap 70 series is a different story...not unless it's rusted through!

-H-
SWB BJ's seem to pop up quite often, but really, the more HD modles rarely make an appreence. I love your SWB BJ70 and would even consider a MWB 74 or whatever they're called BUT my biggest desire is a Turbo-Diesel Troupy. Unfortunatly... I'm not seeing alot of tyhose. Another bugger is that in reality, I'd also like the drivetrain becuaee ulitmatly I could be perfectly happy with a Turbo-diesel 60 Series as well. It's funny how we really only DIDN'T get like 2 versions (not counting all the diesel engines we didn't get) of the Cruiser, the 70 and the 105, but those seem to be the exact models that specificaly appeal to us here on the board... I mean we litteraly got everysinlge other model, so why oh why couldn't we even get an FZJ70 if they were so worried about emissions??? How about a UZJ78??? Now there's no real excuse for them not being offered here, like I said, we've gotten every other series, just not the 70 or 105. Something is rotten in Denmark.

Problem with legaly importing from OZ is after all that you've still got an 84 that in all likely hood will need a new engine or at least a thurough going over and a Turbo kit... Your point about a CHEAP 70 series is very well made. So much so I'm sad in reading it :( I'm starting to think that maybe pulling some scam on the importation folks at the US gov. moght not be so bad, 84 VIN tag, fly over to OZ to relally USE trhe rig so it doesn't look so new...

Lowenbrau, I hate to even ask, but what exactly happened??? I shudder to think...

Cheers

Dave

Even the very latest 7x series vehicles (Wagon, Troopy and Trayback) don't have ABS, Airbags, Stability Control, or beepers that go off with a different tone for every reason (something about US cars that iritates me)

They're an old fashioned 4wd and I guess most seppos just aren't interested....

Haha, nice, I'd be taking pictures of the troopy as well.

Looks like a euro style camper troopy, going by the accessories on it and number plate, swiss judging by the number plate and white on red cross and CH stickers.

Do they let you drive non-compliant diesel vehicles through the US on short-stay trips, which I assume this troopy is doing, though it is possibly not diesel?

I have not heard much about them, any idea what takes so long, is it just fitting them, or is that to drill an extra hole in the rim as well, or something else that takes so long?

Not sure but my son works part time at a tire shop and he said they take a bit to get installed right.

As for trades buying a 7x series, the so called big domestic 3 are cheaper and more ubiquitous, and easier repair and hence why a 7x series would never sell as a trades truck. Sorry as much as I would like to see them this is the realistic truth!

If you import them for a USA trip and then out to somewhere else, no problem if it is not permanent. We met a Swiss couple (fellow countrymen) in cowtown on their way around the world last summer, who needed some brake parts for their 75, we helped them out and then met them in Death Valley 4-5 months later after they did Alaska. The told us they got a visa and import papers for their trans N/S America trip before heading off to Far East.

We have found OZ and African/Middle Eastern and European troopy and70 series are quite well sued and not in as good a condition as JDMs. OZ 7x have a lot of mileage on them compared to Japanese market one.

With the 1HZ motors in the 7x's I'd much prefer a vehicle with mileage than without. Short stop/start use is bad for them...

I thought 8 hours for 4 wheels sounded a little too long.

Sure you are not thinking about mechanical beadlocks?

The internal beadlocks are like thin inner tubes, made out of stronger material. To install them you need to drill an extra air valve hole in the rim, then they just go inside the tyre when you put it on.

Hi guys

I just brought this home from England (I live in Denmark)
Well we just need the engine, gearbox and transfer for the old Volvo 6x6. The rest is going of in pieces...
