No, just buy the VIN plate (if it even has one at that age) and put it on a brand new 70 series. Wind the odomotre over a bit with an electric drill and import a brand new 70 series as an 84 model.

Just got to tell them you had a full restoration done in Aus, along with a later model emission compliant motor installed.

Really gents, it wasn't that hard at all to find my 70. They pop up on IH8MUD all of the time.

With 1984 being the first year, you should be able to import a 70 series troopy from OZ for about $15,000 or so, including a trip there to get it and make sure it makes it on the boat.

Now...a cheap 70 series is a different story...not unless it's rusted through!

I thought of doing that. :sombrero:

Easy, we spam info@toyota.com with "we want a 70!" emails!
Can you imagine? "oh my god, we received 11,512,928 emails of lunatics who want a 70 series ... call Japan right now!" :victory:

How many of those 11,512,928 emails are from people who are ready to write checks? 10? 20? 50 if you're lucky?

This isn't politics. "Votes" don't count, money counts. Ten million emails from people who don't have $40k to the throw down are worthless.

And, as has been pointed out, those who DO have $20k or $30k in spare change lying around can import one right now if they want to jump through the hoops. So unless we can somehow convince Toyota to sell 70's for Camry prices, what would be the point of emailing them?

Somebody should import this, 1984 so it's more than 25yrs. old....

That thing ain't an '84... 1990, most likely. I know what its like to have an improperly imported Cruiser seized by the gov't and crushed and it isn't a nice feeling. Certainly not when you have four years of payments left on it.

Since I was ready to using computer bots to achieve such a high amount ... it would be one person. And a million computers. But since computers can't drive ...

There's quite the difference between buying a used truck through loopholes and buying a new vehicle at your local dealership.

That's what computers with artificial intelligence are for.

Where have all the 70s gone, down to Australia....etc.
The new 70 series front end might not be very sexy, but the thought of that new Toyo intercooled turbo diesel V8 in a 70 series certainly gets me excited.

The twin turbo V8 diesel out of a 200 series would be even sweeter, maybe a future engine swap for my troopy when 200 series front cuts are more readily available and cheaper, if it can be shoehorned between the chassis rails in an older style 70 series.

They don't all come down here though, we don't get the new 70 series SWB/MWB models that I have seen photos of from other markets (was it Saudi or somewhere middle eastern?).

I have always preffered the look of the 70 series SWB over the troopy, the perfect looking 4WD in my eyes.

That is quite possibly the most painful Cruiser Story I have ever read...

Now just when are you going to do your US tour? A SWB would be able to fit in a cargo container going back to OZ much easier....LOL....kinda....:coffeedrink:

Me 2 Simon!

I was lucky to get the MWB 73 and recently the MLWB 77.

Hard to live out of a SWB 70...met a guy in SnT 08 with a Kanukistani 71, had the clamshell RTT on top but the back end was crammed full...very tight!

You should post up your troopy Simon, or at least the link to your rig shots, build up!

Hey again Jan,

I was lucky to get the MWB 73.
I assume there isn't a TD V8 in there though, unfortunatly.

Yes, that's why I went with the troopy, was originally planning on a SWB, without plans to live out of it, but others talked me out of it due to the lack of interior space for snowboarding and other gear, and I have had lots of experience driving high roof camper troopies like mine in New Zealand on numerous snowboarding holidays, so buying a similar camper here made more sense.

Have not had a chance to get many more photos of my troopy into my rig/build thread as yet. Here is that thread, but there are a lot of photos in there of the NZ campers I have hired in the past, and some of the campers I was looking at when searching for mine, so it will probably take a while to load...

Here is another couple of pics of it, no real changes to it since the photo in the build thread though...

...am slowly getting it upgraded, recently had the bullbar modded to allow larger spotties in it (Lightforce XGT) and welded tabs to mount the spotties and fog lights plus two antennas, and then had it freshly powdercoated, and have put in a 2 inch body lift.

Have a few things that I have bought and are waiting to go into it, changing the dual battery trays to triple battery trays, have the Lightfoce XGT spotties and IPF 840 fog lights plus UHF CB antenna and mobile (cell) antenna to go on the bullbar.

Next might be lockers, probably going to try out the new Eaton/Harrop ELockers, or might go for some custom 16x10" rims with a little more backspace than the current 16x8's, to widen the track a little, and they will have Staun internal beadlocks as well to allow airing the tyres right down for the upcoming snow season.

Nope, wish I could get the V8 on eBay, but no extra cash - saving for my '09 trips. I turbo'd my 1HZ and runs great now. But sure do love those troopys...:smiley_drive: thanks for the pics!

Heard they take about 8 hours to do 4 tires with those Staun internals.

I too wish I could afford one of those V8's, no chance at the moment though.

The turbo really improves the 1HZ, makes it more like a 'normal' car to drive in terms of response, it is a great improvement.

No problem with the pics, hope to get some internal pics and some once I get a few more mods completed up soon.

I have not heard much about them, any idea what takes so long, is it just fitting them, or is that to drill an extra hole in the rim as well, or something else that takes so long?
