FOR SALE: 1999 Land Rover Discovery I - 143K Miles - $10,800

Location: Huntsville, Alabama, USA

This 99 DI SD has the 4.0L V8 engine with automatic transmission and no sunroof. I bought it from Ben Little in 2013 after he added all sorts of goodies. I’m sad to say it’s time to find a better home for it.

Ben’s original build and for-sale descriptions included a LOT of details about this vehicle and his many customizations to it. His postings can be found at the following two links, which provide those details:

Build Thread - https://forum.expeditionportal.com/threads/99-sd-build.27708/

Sale Thread - https://forum.expeditionportal.com/threads/1999-discovery-sd-chawton-white-13-000.111440/

I won’t repeat ALL of those details in this post, but here are just a few of the more valuable add-ons, which alone would give you an appreciation for the asking price if you were to even partially recreate this build (estimates I list are based on recent searches and don’t include the labor for installing all of the customizations):

  • Safety Devices roof rack and rear ladder - $4000 new
  • NATO wheels - $1000 new
  • Front TrueTrac - $650
  • Rear Detroit - $800
  • Front RoverTracks/ Longfield HD Axles/ CV’s - $1400
  • Rear RoverTracks HD axles - $500
  • Front and rear welded on diff guards – hire Ben
  • Front and rear GBR 4.11 HD ring and pinion - $800
  • Rear pinion guard
  • 3in HD RTE springs - $500
  • 3in OME sport shocks - $700
  • RTE castor corrected arms - $400
  • RTE rear links - $400
  • Mantec snorkel – $300
  • Full custom bumpers front and rear plus sliders – again, hire Ben (!)
  • 33” Falken Wildpeak All-terrain tires (see the “new” list below) – $1750 installed
I looked at completed sales over the past five years at another site to get a feel for transactions comparable to this vehicle. Although I generally didn’t find rigs that were as well-equipped, I found a helpful scatter plot of completed sales to provide a starting point:

Ben definitely prepared this vehicle for camping and trail adventures with custom bumpers, frame sliders, diff guards, rear storage space, and a roof rack. He added three inches of lift and the ability to accommodate larger tires, so there’s an amazing amount of ground clearance for off-road travel and maneuvering. The custom table built into the rear door is a nice feature as well! This Disco does not come with the ARB Fridge, I’m afraid.

Very recent changes include…

  • New tires (Falken Wildpeak A/T 4W, 255/85R16) x5
  • New muffler, tailpipe, and tailpipe bracket
  • New shocks (Old Man Emu Nitrocharger Plus) x4
  • New wiring harness for the Hella 4K lights
  • Newly-cleaned fuel tank
  • New fuel pump and fuel line filter
  • New anti-trickle fill valve for fuel filling
  • New engine oil, oil filter, and differential oil
  • New panhard bushings
  • New marine battery
Less recently, I also had a new driver’s seat custom-sewn, so it’s quite comfortable. I also removed some surface rust in a few less-visible areas and repainted them. There are now more small rust bubbles in the door well for the rear passenger door. What else needs work?

  • Both rear windows need new regulator assemblies
  • I never used the ham radio, so it probably needs some attention
  • I have a new winch line available, if requested, but the SuperWinch EPi 9.0 winch probably needs a new drum first (or the winch replaced)
  • I’ve misplaced one of the buttons for the front seat adjusters, and the internals for the driver seat probably need a cleanout
  • The squirters for the wiper fluid for the front windshield are not functional (but the wipers are)
Here are a few recent photos.

Let me know if you have specific questions or need more pictures via direct email to tgwhitmo at aol dot com and mention “Rover” in the subject line.

I'll go ahead and reply here in response to some email requests for more photos of the rust spots and the interior. I'll watch this thread in case anyone wants to post their questions here. It makes sense for everyone to see the content.

Also, thanks to Jack Mac for his feature article:

More photos:

Door striker/frame/pillar area for rear door on driver's side. The black area below the striker is where I treated rust several years ago and didn't re-paint it with the Chawton white. I was waiting to see if further rust would develop, which didn't happen. There is some surface rust above the striker that is shown in the photo.

I didn't take any photos of the footwells; they are covered in carpet and I didn't have time to take things apart this morning to reach them. I have done some work in the past in the front, passenger's side footwell to clean up and treat surface rust.

I will follow up with a handful more photos in a subsequent post in this thread.
