looking for information regarding using a 03 ford excursion with 100k. in excellent condition with all miles on the interstate. Plan on backcountry driving and exploring in the west. will be living in Ketchum Idaho starting this winter. any date re: reliability, equipment, tires, etc would be appreciated.
thanks.

As an add on to the above post, would like to hear from people who have driven the Dawson Highway to Inuvik, NT. Thinking about august 2010 from either Boston or Ketchum, Idaho. About a month long trip.

I would not be afraid of a moderately high mileage Ford truck with good maintenance. I've owned a number of them that I drove to very high miles with minor problems. My Expedition (5.4) has 180K and runs very well. My F350 (7.3L DT) nly has 70K miles, so it is too soon to tell...

If it is a 03 6.0L diesel I would be very cautious about using it for an expedition type vehicle, the 03 and early 04 6.0L have lots of problems and have earned the ford 6.0L the reputation as being one of the worst diesels ever made.

Other then that I think the truck it self wold be a great base for the expedition truck.

Early 6.0s are a gamble. Some people had problems some didn't but they are known in the powerstroke realm as risky. If you could find a better deal on a 2000, they had the forged rods. Try and hold out for a 2000-02 if you can. thedieselstop and powerstroke.org are good resources. I searched for a long time for a 7.3 in the price range I wanted.

Thanks for thr reply. It is a 6.0. I actually already own the suv(bought new in late 03) and you're are right about engine problems. I had a major one where they had to re-wire the engine as it kept loosing power and and would not start or only operate at a very low speed. Thankfully, it was covered by warranty and "knock on wood" has been fine since. by the way there is an interesting web site call Powerstroke diesel that has some good info. Perhaps you already know of it.

The Excursion is a great platform. Almost all of the drivetrain parts are interchangeable with the trucks. The only downfall is that the Excursion is very HEAVY, and they all came with the Dana 50 front axle. Te negative to that axle is the stub shafts, they're too small. That can be solved with a Dynatrac free spin hub conversion.

So as long as the 6.0 is good, build it! Just be careful on the weight, or you'll be over 11K before you know it!

I have a 2000 V10 Excursion. I love the truck it has done everything I have asked it to do. Just remember how big it is.
