If you like the plane I say go with it.

This... it's your unique build and if you like it go with it.

That being said I do like the looks of it moved back a bit...

(I did round out the nose a bit as well)

I am with Xrunner.

Well, personally I would not go for the plane, but that is not very important, you are not building it for me. I think to make the plane look nice up there you should go with the photoshop that Xrunner did; it seems the best for me. I think dipping down the front of the "nose" would also help, like in the Photo. You could still install a window, it would just be smaller. Of course this would mean more work, to fab up that change in the front.

I think if you are going to go with it, it will make a great space for a bed without being in the main body of the ambulance, which I really like. I presume this would also require you to cut into the box that is between the ambulance and the cab, to keep the bed space, yes? Not sure if you are willing to have that space taken away from you or not.

Will the door in the plane remain functional? That would seem to be pretty cool, plus make for great ventilation when the time is right.

If you decide not to get the airplane up there, you could always do a fold out bed off of the rear of the vehicle, or one of the sides etc. They always seem to be nice in my opinion. Of course the heat goes right out of them in the winter, still a nice idea if added space is desired.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the feedback. Keep it coming. The cutting into the diamond plate box is for access and will not result in a loss of space there. As far as the plane's side door, I think I will glue it shut because of the difficulty in sealing it.

Thanks Xrunner for the photoshop!

Let's hear some more suggestions. :ylsmoke:

Photoshop

Hey Xrunner,

Could you please do some more photoshop for me? I want to see how the plane (just the upper window area without the button part) would look over the ambulance box where the pop top is.

Looking at the front picture it looks very high with the plane. Are you going to fit under bridges?

This is how I was thinking I could blend it in better. I did a little cut and pasting. The top of the box will be a fixed hardtop with windows to replace the defunct pop top that is there now. Does this work?

value of space?

Plan B is to have a roof rack over the cab for a couple of kayaks and a small sailboat. Is it better to have more interior space or space for toys for the trip? Without the plane ill be a foot or two shorter. Does the height decrease amount to any advantage?

Personally I would think that height may be a major factor depending on where you plan to travel. IE there are more bridges that are too low for a 13' truck on the back highways and byways. Some really great trials that you can easily go on are height limited, such as Yankee Boy Basin in Ouray Colorado. (You can google it and see what I mean.)

Then again one of the most common discussions on here is the need for storage and space inside the truck. No room for my shoes, or my cloths, or my self rescue gear etc.

If you feel like you have ample space in the vehicle as is, then you may want to really question your reasons to add more space. If you feel like you need a place that is a dinning area, and a different place that is a sleeping area you may want to really question how important the low clearance thing is for you.

So... Clear as mud? I guess the short answer is the same as every question on this forum when it comes to build ideas... IT is user preference, and no one can answer it for you mate.

Either way, love the truck!

Platform for plane is completed. I need to finish out the plane interior before we attach it to the platform.
