Free and legal copy of Garmin Mapsource

Got this tip off the T4A group. tried it and it does work:

1. Download and install the training center software from Garmin:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-04
(you don't need to own a Garmin fitness device or activate the training center software).

2. Download and install the latest MapSource update:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209
You now have a legal working copy of MapSource with a PC only base map.

Pretty cool stuff. Get yours now as there is no telling how long Garmin will keep this alive.

cheers

Graham,

Thank you for posting. I have a rather old version of Mapsource so an updated version will be nice.

Nice Score. Thanks for passing on the info. BTW I greatly enjoyed your article in the Overland Journal.

Ok cool, so I've done the downloads and I can use the MapSource but the trainer wants a device hooked up.
Do I not use the Trainer but still need it to allow Mapsource to work?

Yes. Trainer is the key that allows you to install MapSource without buying it. If you want to use trainer, then you'll have to do whatever trainer wants.

I have not tried deleting (uninstalling) trainer, though I probably will. My assumption is that you can with no effect on MapSource. I believe that the MapSource Update installer looks for previously installed versions, and Trainer counts as one. After the installer has run, use for Trainer is what you make of it.

Does anyone else have to unzip this program before each use? I can't figure out a way to install the program so I can just click and enjoy, rather it goes through the unzip and licensing each time?

Nope, didn't have to do that. Mine works fine. Did you install Trainer first?

cheers

Yes I had too, it wouldn't install mapsource until I installed trainer. The icon is right on my desktop, but everytime I select it it unzips "disk1" and brings up the licensing agreement. I'm thinking its more of a user issue than a software issue ;)

I just installed Mapsource just fine. But The GPS I have is an older Garmin GPS 12MAP. It should be able to use the mapsource but mapsource does not see the GPS. Could it be locked?? The map does not change when I go from hi to low res map. Also the find does not find much. Any Ideas?? Set to Garmin format and host mode.

The GPS works with MS Street and Maps if I I turn the GPS from Garmin format to NMEA.

Mapsource is free, why the need to do this?

Now, if you want detailed maps and the ability to use them to route, then you still need one of the detailed map programs like CN v8, right?
