I hope those do the job, because like you I would love to have the Rigid Industries ones too, but when you start multiplying the number of lights you need, that price reaches the unjustifiable range very quickly.

Rigid is junk as well. Check out Baja designs. BEST leds you can buy and they're not much more.

Ah, thanks Java! Just to clarify, are you referring to the square lights I got for the sides? Or the wider ones we got for the bumper? I haven't tried either one out, yet, but I should soon - before Scooter and Oz go off and order some, too

The wider ones. Just like rlenz pictured. They are fine for general lighting, but are pretty meh. At least they are cheap.

I just looked at Baja (www.bajadesigns.com), and the cheapest LED I found was over $200. Maybe they have some cheaper stuff, but unless they do, I'll have to stick with Rigid.

After all the arm waving we've done about area/scene lighting, I decided to just use Tecniq lights (http://www.tecniqinc.com/). Tecniq makes emergency vehicle lighting that has a good reputation, and their products are showing up more and more frequently instead of Whelen. I installed seven of their ambulance ceiling lights in my module, and they did an excellent job. The price for their 6-LED work light is just a bit more than Rigid, and their design will let me recess the light into the side using my existing mounting points.

One of their dealers is CovertLights (http://www.covertlights.com/steelhead-work-lights-spot-or-flood-by-tecniq-usa/) - here are some of their specs and prices on the Tecniq line. I'm planning to buy the Tecniq Steelhead 6 LED flood light for my module - the price is $139, and that's close enough to Rigid that I'll stick with a company I already know. I may also find some use for the Tecniq Steelhead 2-LED lights as well ($55.00).

I have a couple of those lights. They suck IMO. Fine for ambient lighting, setting up camp, or slowly crawling around when you dont want to bother others with headlights. But not much output, and very wide spread.....

And I like Vision-X. Cheap lights aren't good and good lights aren't cheap. China is good at making copies of things but they don't always deliver.

I use these small lightweight models for floods



And these for driving.

Holy moly... those are spendy! I don't mind spending cash on good stuff, where it's needed. For any important lights, they'll be good ones. But, for the area lighting I just can't justify spending more than the whole bumper cost. They're more likely to end up hanging on a tree branch than failing...

One other reason why I like Tecniq lights is their warranty:

"Limited Warranties and Procedures

And this should handle the continuing problem of dead LEDs in an expensive light.

I'm tempted to take out a dealership in Tecniq lights -- I need a couple of the P06 lights myself, and maybe a couple of the P02 lights, and maybe a couple more somewhere....

Thanks, Bob... those P06 lights look like they'd fit perfectly in the bumper openings. I don't think any of us have tried the cheapo ones yet, but we're all anxious to find out.

Hi all, and thanks for the input. Trust me, I get the difference between cheap and good. For my EDC bag, and for my wife, we have great Streamlight flashlights. And, for weapons lights, I again go for quality. But, when we wander out to the hot tub at night, the flashlight which gets used most often is the freebie Harbor Freight LED light. It's a pretty low-risk journey...

Let's see what these cheapos are capable of, before we write them off. If they don't work here, I'll use them somewhere for sure.

I finally got our own front bumper mounted and re-installed the hood hinge brackets. With those loose, I couldn't drive the rig to check the speedometer after changing the DIP switch settings. Well, today, I finally got to check that out...

I found that the settings I had painstakingly calculated (in other words... copied from Ozrockrat) resulted in a speedometer reading that was about 3-4 mph higher than actual. For our rig, with the 315/80R22.5 tires, it turns out that 1100010010 results in a speedometer reading that matches the GPS indications almost perfectly.



The dash is back together now. Time to do more exterior work this weekend... if it will just quit raining!

Now you know how I've felt for the last 3 months!

It's finally stopped here and is actually beautiful with temps ranging from 62° to 83° today. It probably won't last long though, because we have a CAT 4/CAT 5 hurricane headed up the Atlantic coast line. So far we're good, but a few degrees less turn to the North or a late turn, and we could be in deep do-do if it enters the Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks, Pat! But, you forget... mine was a police retirement, not a fire retirement. :ylsmoke:

Anyway, we're getting closer to paint. It seems that, as we get down to the nitty gritty details, those drag on forever. I admit that I much prefer the big progress of something substantial... but, scraping off the last of the decals and reflective striping where the Whizzy Wheels didn't reach (and sanding those areas) was a necessary step. We finished the wiring to the flood light locations, as some were connected to strobe wiring, and primed the aluminum pans.



Admittedly, the new puppy took some attention as well, this weekend, and we did a few long hikes in the woods. And, I did start work on the rear bumper brackets.
And, Kara and I had a nice outside dinner and some wine-in-the-outdoor-hot-tub time. So, overall, it was a great weekend.



I've got to be in NJ this week, so no progress on the rig until next weekend. But, we're hoping the blackification process will commence soon!
