Nothing like a hard deadline to to focus your time.

Quoted for truth! That's when I got most of the work done on my Scout...when we were scheduled to move and I had a deadline to meet!

With the MRAP bumper and blacked out...that truck says, "Mooove biatch, get out the way!"

Hmm, I actually don't have any events that weekend yet, and think I'm closer to it than most of you guys!

If you're planning on camping, you better read up on the FAQs, because there are lots of rules! A basically, it's just a big open field with not even any trees.

https://www.overlandexpo.com/faq/#east

One of those rules is...no trailers the size of mine allowed in the camp ground. I would have to camp at another campground, or be directed to a "special parking area" somewhere in BFE!

Trailers: small overland trailers are ok; teardrop-style and small pop-ups are also okay (no hard-sided standing-headroom trailers except micro-trailers, less than 13 feet with no slideouts). Trucks pulling motorcycles on trailers are acceptable; if you have an enclosed motorcycle trailer, contact us to see if we can accommodate it. (Vehicles with trailers may be directed to special parking areas and so may not be able to camp close by friends in regular-sized vehicles or on motorcycles.) NOT PERMITTED: 5th-wheel or large travel trailers, or toy haulers cannot be accommodated.

Focused, with a deadline... yes, indeed!

Hey, quick question for you ambo folks. Is there a way to locate studs within the walls or roof, through the skin? I want to anchor into the roof studs. I know the wall and roof spacing (16" and 12", right?), but how can I find the reference stud without an exploratory hole? I did some Google Foo and found nothing helpful about stud finders through aluminum skin. Will those home stud finders sense the density/thickness difference for me?

Thanks!

Ross

Ross, I would drop some of your ceiling lights and look/feel through the holes to locate the rafter beams. I would also check several of them to make sure the beams are evenly spaced.

Of course, there is always the old method of knocking or tapping on the roof and listening for the change in sound when you come across a rafter.

Thanks Pat... you know how sometimes you look at something that's obvious to someone else? I guess I'm too far in the weeds. I was focused on finding the roof studs (rafters?) from the outside. So much so, that I forgot about those inside lights. Thanks, sir!

Run the AC for a while on full bore and use your infrared thermometer. No idea if it would actually work (it should) but sure sounds like a highly technical solution to a simple problem that Pat already solved. :)

That should work since the skins are welded to the 2x2 structure. The areas over the framing will conduct heat a lot more readily than areas over void spaces. You might also be able to measure some differences if the module cools in the night air once the morning sun hits it.

Another thought would be to remove the action area access panel and take a peek with a flashlight. That should give you an idea for the sidewall framing spacing. You can also remove the warning lights in the front of a side. That will give you access to the dead space that wiring runs through. A little fiddling and you should be able to measure the spacing on the vertical members. Here's a typical photo of my wiring areas:

You could also pull the cabinet above the seat (passengers side) and get the spacing from there. Its only held in with a bunch of screws and some silicon.

All good ideas and, while the simple (removing a light) sounds best, I do like the more complicated technically challenging options. :) Perhaps I can repurpose that x-ray bone density scanner that our local university surplus sales warehouse has sitting there... haha!

Have a great weekend, all. We have been busy enough that I didn't get anything done this week. But, this weekend is an all-ambo work weekend.
