2020 Mercedes Sprinter 2500 Cargo 3.0L turbo-diesel 4WD 144" wheelbase high roof custom RV
What a mouthful! This van was purchased new in December 2020 as an empty cargo van. The color is Pebble Grey. It was upfit over 2021 and has taken us on a 60,000 mile journey through several countries and many beautiful landscapes. The complete build and travels are all documented on this forum, which will probably tell you way more than this written description.
The van has every feature one might need for full-time living on the road. In no particular order, there is an approximately-queen-size, stowable bed. The Sleep & Store lift mechanism stows it neatly against the ceiling and it pulls down to countertop height when needed for sleeping. Flarespace flares make it possible to sleep sideways inside, compactifying the entire interior layout. Beneath the bed are two benches and an adjustable table. There's seating enough for four or five if you're friendly. (If you're not friendly, why are they in your van, anyway?) Beneath the benches is a massive storage drawer which pulls out the rear doors of the van (add dimensions here). Behind the benches on both sides is a ton more storage. Moving towards the kitchen, there is a full-size domestic sink by Ruvati. It is from their line of workstation sinks, so it includes a drop-in cutting board which completes the counter top. This adds a significant amount more working area on the counters. The countertops are very durable bamboo, and the cabinetry is constructed of cabinet-grade, fully-sealed hardwood plywood with solid hardwood bracing throughout. Live edge features lend a rustic feel to an otherwise modern interior. There's a standard faucet as well as a filtered-water faucet at the sink. The filtered water is processed through a three-filter reverse-osmosis system for nearly pure drinking water. Coupled with a UV light filter, you can have safe drinking water from any source available. On the cooking side of things, there is a two-burner induction cooktop set into the countertop above the refrigerator. There's also an electric oven beneath the counter. It may be marketed as a "toaster oven", but it's plenty large enough to roast an entire chicken or pork butt, bake bread and cookies. It can dehydrate, air fry, you name it. If you're not eating like a king or queen in this van, that's on you. We mentioned the refrigerator, which is a Norcold DE0041, with a freezer built-in. It can run on AC or DC power, but is wired to run on DC only because it's more efficient. There's also a 26"x36" full stainless steel wet bath. The wet bath includes a Nature's Head composting toilet and an awesome Nebia by Moen atomizing shower head. A Nautilus retractible door encloses the space so the rest of the van stays dry while showering. An overhead shelf from Vancillary rounds out the main features of this custom RV. Interior lighting is all LEDs on two zones (fore and aft) with dimmable lights above the bed to help wind down before sleeping.
On the systems side of things, there's a bit more going on. Starting with the charging bit - this van uses a second auxiliary alternator from Nations with a Wakespeed voltage regulator to charge the batteries. Alternatively, if the engine is not running but shore power is available, the van can be plugged in and the batteries charged through a 30A shore power charger. The battery bank consists of 510Ah of lithium batteries from Renogy. The batteries feed a 3kW Xantrex Freedom X inverter for AC power, as well as a DC power distribution panel. So we discussed where the electrons are stored; fresh water is stored in two 32-gallon wheel well tanks. Grey water is stored in a 21-gallon tank installed in the factory spare tire location. Water is heated on demand with a diesel-fired furnace and a glycol-to-water plate heat exchanger. That same furnace heats air for the van's interior while the engine is not running through a glycol-to-air heater core, which is awesome for those frigid winter nights. The heat is retained by Havelock sheep's wool insulation throughout the entire body of the van, including the floors. The heating system is controlled by an adjustable thermostat, so you can just set it and forget it. It can be turned on manually with the press of a button, too. A MaxxAir ceiling fan gets the hot air out through the roof, or can be reversed to pull fresh outside air in. On the van chassis itself, nearly every possible option is included. It has the largest 11" touchscreen Mercedes offered, including navigation (North and South America maps included!), satellite radio, bluetooth, etc. The instrument panel and main display are full-color displays and navigable via touchscreen and steering wheel controls. Heated leather, power-adjustable, swivel seats are excellent on cool days, and are protected by extremely durable Covercraft Cordura nylon seat covers. Full LED headlights and taillights provide an excellent view of the road, and make the van highly visible to others. The 360-degree camera system makes parking an absolute breeze.
On the exterior of the van, there are several modifications. Bug screens from The Bug Wall are installed on the sliding door and rear door openings, to help keep out pesky flies, but allow wonderful airflow through the van. Amp Research power retractible side steps are installed on both sides of the van to aid entry and exit. The spare tire was relocated to make room for the greywater tank and is now mounted on a rear ladder made by Owl Vans. A Trasharoo exterior garbage carrier mounts over the spare tire, so you can carry in carry out. On the topic of tires, all five have been upgraded to Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws in the original size. An outdoor hose connection at the rear of the van is perfect for washing off the mud after a long hike, or even washing the van itself. The suspension has been upgraded with a Van Compass 4.3 kit including their rear shock Baja Brackets. What that means is the rear shock absorbers have been replaced with adjustable Falcon piggyback shocks and additional leafs have been added to the rear leaf spring packs, the front struts have been replaced with Bilstein B6 units, auxiliary adjustable Falcon piggyback shocks have been added to the front, and Sumo Springs bumpstops have been added to the front suspension. Climbing the ladder to the roof of the van, a Starlink has been flat-mounted on the roof for satellite-based internet access wherever you may roam. If that happens to be in an area with tree cover, the Starlink is removable to be relocated off-vehicle for better satellite visibility. A SureCall Fusion 2 Go Max cell signal booster increses cell reception in remote areas. A Girard GG750 legless awning is installed above the sliding door of the van, and the switches are conveniently located on the passenger's side B-pillar. A simple button press extends and retracts the awning, and turns the built-in LED light strip on and off. Other modifications to the van include conversion to LED bulbs for fog lights and doubled-up reverse lights for better nighttime visibility when backing into those late-night campsites. A clear film is applied to the leading edge of the hood, A-pillars, above the windshield, and all the door handle cups, to protect vulnerable areas of the vehicle's paint. Infrared-blocking window tint is installed to all front windows, radically reducing solar heat loading. A complete set of insulated window covers from Quest Overland is included. Brakes have been replaced with upgraded pads and rotors from Power Stop. Transmission was serviced at 40,000 miles with complete fluid replacement and filter. Engine oil was serviced at every 20,000 miles. Fuel filter, differential and transfer case oils were all replaced at 40,000 miles. Engine and cabin air filters were replaced every 20,000 miles.
Asking price is $130,000.
