FSJ buildup- Tank!

For reference...

If you go back a few pages and look at the pics of mine I posted you will see what yours will look like...ish. My '83 FS Cherokee is running this:
256 (4.2) webber carb, DUI, straight exhaust (sounds like an Army 2 1/2ton diesel!)
t176 4 speed
NP208 tcase
AMC20 w/loc rite 272 gears (Barf)
Dana 44 open 272 gears (Barf again)
4" Rusty's lift
33x10.50x15 BFG Mud T/As on factory slots (15x7 IIRC)

Even with the lift and the 10.50s I get a little rub. mostly on the front springs (need to adjust the stops) but if mine were a wide trac I'd be golden. I would offer to post some more pics but the Internet here (Iraq) is having fits and won't let me...Grr...
But the Mud T/As are a great all around tire...I don't always rotate them as I should and even with the locker out back they have been a good wearing tire. I can air down to almost single didgits to play in the rocks around Las Cruces and have yet to lose a bead thanks to the narrow wheels. They don't do so great in the sand with it being such a heavy truck and narrow tires but I will run BFGs whenever I can!

on my commander i ran 32x11.5x17's BFG Mud tires. i got had about 50K miles on the tires and they still had 1/4 of the tread left.

i agree they are a great tire. i'll probably just get a set of those in a 33x10.5x15

i think my wheels are 8" wide i have right now. they have more back spacing then the stock wheels.

i still need to wet sand it, but since its been really humid, 30% here. i'm waiting for a few sunny days to let the paint fully cure. i still need to paint the tailgate.

Although I'm usually into newer vehicles I love this Jeep. Its simple, rugged, and gets the job done. :victory:

You need stuff?

Lost...
I'm leaning towards parting out my 83 Cherokee since it has such bad rust and the motor was giving oil pressure issues whe I stored it. There are Piles of good parts on mine that will work on yours. Its gonna be a while before mine meets the plasma torch but I'm trying to see if anyone needs stuff before I start the storage or scrapper process. Let me know. Thanks!

i need a lift kit, but other then that mine is really complete and in good shape.

i have the same oil pressure issues. at idle its usually at 7 psi. i'm not sure if its my crappy mechanical gauge or just the pump. the timing cover was in great shape before i put it back on for the rebuild.

FSJ's are good all around rigs... I built one up and ended up trading it for a CJ 7... here's a few pics to inspire you to keep going...

I'm thinking about selling off my 07 Ram and picking up a FSJ to replace it. Getting tire of the monthly truck payment! Is there any years of FSJ that I need to avoid? And other than rust, anything I need to be on the lookout for?

That is one great looking Jeep, you are doing a great job. I have to admit that I'm disappointed the diesel conversion didn't work out.

Out of curiosity, is there enough room to sleep in the back? I'm 6'2" and my wife is 5'2". I'm sure she'd fit just about anywhere, but what about me?

Thanks!

No argument...

If I can make a couple suggestions...(to Pepe)
First, go to the IFSJA (international full size jeep site) for specifics and to troll through their accumulated knowledge. There are some real good people over there too.
I would also suggest you find your FSJ and drive it a little while before ditching the newer truck. I completely agree with the no payment philiosophy...but you should get a good working understanding of the FSJ and its potential for being thirsty.
The good news is even the nicer ones can still be located pretty easy and for not a huge sum of moolah. They are easy to work on and parts are very available. My suggestion is to find one with the nicest body (least amount of rust) and go through all the mechanicals. That way you have a decent looking truck that runs like new! Best of luck!
