i agree with the above.

i came back home Saturday night after working up in Montana with my waggy.

about half way home i looked at my volt meter and it was reading 12V. i had everything on: heater, stereo, cellphone charger, heater, headlights, fog lights, and 2 amps for the stereo system.

i shut everything off including my headlights. (9:30 pm) and continued to drive, since i was in the middle of no where. i made it all the way home (60 miles) on just a huge Walmart Battery with a 3 year warranty.

i think since just the coil and ignition system suck the juice i was lucky enough to get home.

i'm heading out to the junkyard to get CS144 alternator off a caddy that puts out 140 amps.:victory:

Stories...

Ahhh...the stories I can associate with all the jeeps I have owned over the years. If I were a smarter man, I'd write a book. If I had kids, I'd tell them stories of trial, adventure, and horror...Oh well..They are likely funniest to me anyway! LoL! But park me in front of a campfire and hand me a Guinness...and get comfy!

i love my waggy.

i just took out my alternator myself. i figured it was the rectifier and associated parts. it has a chevy 10si alternator. so i went to the alternator guy in town and bought all the rebuild parts for $20 and proceeded to rebuild it.

i took it out to my father-in-laws place to take it apart and rebuild it. took about 30 minutes. i washed the case in the parts washer and then took my time putting it all back together.

i got back home and stuck it back in the jeep and now i have 14.4 volts again.

i love the simplicity of this thing. between the chevy and ford parts, its really easy to find and buy cheap replacement parts.

the only tools you need for a wagoneer are:

9/16" sockets and wrenches
1/2" sockets and wrenches
3/8" sockets and wrenches
flat head screw driver
philips screw driver
pliers
duck tape
zip ties
bailing wire

Definitely love my wagon too. Just put a CS-144 in mine a few weeks ago, I needed a new alternator but I'm not sure if I really needed that one.

i was going to go with the cs144, but i had time restraints. i have to go back to work tomorrow, 1.5 hours away.

and it was cheaper to just rebuild this one.

i have a huge walmart max power battery. its the 1000amp version with a 3 year warranty. my optima that i had in my old commander would not have ever made it 75 miles with the headlights on.:Wow1:

since its summer and the sun stays up until 9.30 pm, i don't really need headlights much.

just an update.

i lost steam on working on this thing since i bought my 1994 ZJ. the ZJ works better for what i want to do and has a better suspension set up.

I sold the Wagoneer Today. Sad to see it go. but i saved it from the crusher to live a few more years.

:(

Well, do you think the new owners will take care of it correctly ? Hopefully they do.

I enjoyed watching your build, thanks. :D

that's it for now. hopefully i'll have the engine back next week and get it installed.

these are the rear coilovers i removed!

hey those were hi tech in the 70s, really helped with body roll and were very popular, I highly coveted a set for my CJ5 but could never afford them ( I think they were like $30-40!)

They are a decent tire - maybe just a touch skinny for your weight class - also consider a metric tire if you want a touch more width. IIRC 285/75R16 works out to a 33x11.5x16. 16" steelies are not that much more expensive than 15" steelies. The tires tend to be a touch more expensive though (~$20 per tire depending on brand).

All this said, 33x10.5x15 would work fine IMO. Or just go 33x12.5 for the commonality. In theory the 10.5s will return better MPG.

I'm running the 285 75 16 retreads from treadwright with the bfg AT tread pattern on my Dodge cummins, so fr no issues at all and they have 20-25K miles probably, nearly 4K just in a two week trip in June.... they are about 33 x 11 as noted above and were something like $90 a corner

the new owner (of Colstrip Montana) paid cash and drove it home. he had to adjust the carb on the way home due to the lower altitude. after he did that it ran better for him.

he is excited to get it lifted and finish up a few of the little things that were left to do. he was looking for a little fixer-upper anyway
