Fuel Storage

First off, as this is my first post here, - I want to extend my compliments to this site! I have been visiting now for about a week and I think it's my new favorite. The purpose and execution of this site is very well thought out, informative and inspiring. I am in Phoenix and can't wait to start getting in on your adventures!!

So I'm looking for your thoughts on extra fuel storage. Which 20L steel gasoline can do you recommend, use, have experience with, like, dislike:

Wedco - with the clamp style closure
or
Blitz - with threaded screw on style closure
or
Any other brand / style that you know of (what about plastic?)

Thanks, I appreciate your input

Brian

Hello Brian,
I would go with the WEDCO fuel can. They are the absolute best ever designed. I would also recomend that you purchase one of the fuel nozels as well from WEDCO. Im not a fan of the BLITZ style (they always leak) and is just a poor design. Everything on the WEDCO has been thought out. Take for instance the handle(s). You can carry 2 cans in each hand (just grab the outer and inner handle on 2 cans side by side. They also really flow the fuel and dont require as much time holding the can up as it does to empty a blitz style. THEY DONT LEAK FUEL when you are filling your gas tank either! You can throw a full wedco can into a fire pit and it wont explode! Dont try that with a blitz style! (Dont try with a WEDCO either. It has already been tested and passed) Anyway just go to the WDECO web site and read. Hope this helps.

If you are interested in plastic cans check out sceptre. NATO is switching to those cans, and I've had very good luck with them.

Great to see you here.

I would agree with the Wedco assessment. They are the only fuel cans I have used. (and they were fantastic) I always found them to be in stock at British Pacific.

You also might want to check into the three handles poly cans from Scepter

I am pretty sure Graham has used these on his many expeditions

Thanks everyone!

The Scepter cans are a great option that I did not know about.

Any idea if there is a mfg website for Wedco, I can't find it. Lots of dealer pages but none from the Wedco company itself.

Thanks again
Brian

The WEDCO web site is a strange one. I have it somewhere I need to look around the old comp a bit. If you are looking to buy I can find the dealer I have bought from in the past (GREAT). I'll be back later with more info.

If I go with Wedco
I will most likely purchase locally from a Checker Auto Parts store.
They have the Wedco cans with spout for $29.
And I have a return to make there and can't find the reciept so I will probably have a store credit burning a hole in my pocket!

Thanks, that would be great if you can find the Wedco website as I still want to read more about them.

You won't go wrong with the Wedco unit. I have been more than happy with them. I will say though, that on the water units, they use a special coating to remove taste and prevent rust. Well, it is failing, and some rust is forming. As these tanks are only used for washing and emergencies, it is less important.

I belatedly second (sixth?) the NATO-style can. The best, period. You can get some good deals online on surplus units from Israel, and I believe they might employ slightly heavier gauge steel than the Wedco units, but I've not weighed a pair for comparison. On the other hand it's hard to guarantee the condition of surplus cans.

I do stick with plastic cans for water, however. Water is a lot harder on steel than gas is, even coated steel. And it's not such a big deal if water cans seep a bit.

Expedition Exchange sells excellent NATO can holders.

FYI
From what I can tell
Wedco and Briggs & Stratton are one in the same or at least one is making the fuel cans and letting the other put their name on them.

Went to the Checker Auto Parts website and found Wedco cans, used their zip code search to find a store location near me with stock avaliable. When I went to the store the can has a Briggs & Stratton sticker on it but it's the same product. Wedco on thier website but B&S in thier store.

Further web search finds that the two companies are partnered in some way.

If you dont need a shiney new one I would go with the Surplus (German / Swiss ect) gas can. Same design as Wedco but around $10.00. I have about 8 of these and 5 of the Wedco. If you get the Surplus ones get a Wedco fuel nozzel. The nozzels they sell with the Surplus ones are cheap or desined for Diesel (huge spout hole). Try Swiss army vehicles and check the Surplus section or Cold War remaketing. Again check the Surplus section.

I sometimes suspected the factory tank on an 88 was just a modified jerry can anyway. :D

And we don't wanna hear about your diesel conversion! I'd kill for a 1HZ to drop in my Land Cruiser right now.
