Fuso Diagnostic Software

On my model year of Fuso (2004) there is a lot of diagnostic information that can be read and tests that can be done using the Mitsubishi Multi Use Tester (MUT) II. For example: fault codes, actuator tests, boost pressure, sensor readings, voltages, etc. This sort of information would be very useful for those of us doing our own maintenance, and for anyone traveling places where Fuso dealers are difficult to find or nonexistent. In fact many troubleshooting procedures are only possible with the MUT.

However it seems this tool is very expensive ($1000+). For many other vehicles cheaper third party software can be purchased that has most of the functionality of the factory tools. But it appears for the Fuso there is no alternative to the MUTII to get this sort of information.

Anyone have any insight to add here? Is there software out there that can access the Fuso onboard diagnostic system? Does anyone know any specifics about the electronics in the truck, for example what sort of network is used (CAN, OBD, J1939, etc.)? I know the fault codes can be read by the flashes of the warning lamp. But I'm really looking for software that can do more advanced diagnostics.

The stuff is usually pretty proprietary. I know on my Unimog the system includes a PC (IBM) with a preprogrammed hard drive and a set of plugs that include standard OBD for passenger cars and SUVs and then a "truck plug" which is unique to Mercedes big trucks, and a transducer box to convert the signals to something the PC can deal with. I got mine slightly used, fairly cheap (I think $1000 or so, and I regard that as very cheap, considering Mercedes wants >$10K new!!), and I feel it's essential if you are going to remote places and various countries.
I don't know if Doug Hackney feels the same way for the FG.
