FZJ80 Full-time 4wd good or bad?

My Dad is finally ready to let go of his 1994 FZJ80. It only has 97000 miles and looks like new. My question is, is the full-time transfer case any good? I will be building it for expo use, not rock crawling. Is there a part-time conversion available? This truck has never seen dirt, always garaged.

Thanks in advance

It's crap, and 97,000 miles is way too high for one of these. I'll help you get rid of it if you want.

There is no reason to do this for the uses you describe. It's an excellent transfer case which if taken care of, with regular fluid changes will last the life of your truck.

The benefits of a part time 80 are debatable. No doubt you reduce wear on the front ring and pinion a bit, but when is the last time you heard of one of those wearing out?

The only time I could see doing this is if you want to run Longfield ChromeMoly birfields, which wear quickly if driven constantly.

It would be worth your trouble to buy a center diff lock switch, so you can lock it in 4wd high for use on dirt or sand roads.

Personaly I did not like the way an 80 handles or drive without full-time.

There are 100's of 80 with over 200K running full-time with zero problems.

i have always been a proponent of part-time four-wheel drive, with manual hubs, and turned my nose up at the 80s. Then I owned one. I still sort of miss getting to hop out and turn the hubs... but now I just stop and stretch my legs and get some fresh air. The full-time case is really really nice. It's near bullet-proof. You can switch from open ("All Wheel Drive") to a true four-wheel drive at the touch of a button. It handles superbly in rain, snow, ice... even in the all-wheel drove mode. I'm sold.

I love the full time 4wd of the 80 series. Excellent on partially snowy/wet or dirt roads....keep it as-is and add the center diff lock switch/7-pin mod and you'll be set.

I'm getting it tomorrow. I'll have to sell my 92 Xtra-cab. Have to pay for everything somehow.

Congrats - leave the case alone. It's so versatile, you will love the ability to run in low range AWD if you deal with tight turns in steep places with the 7-pin mod.

If you need to make an 80's case part time, you are driving the wrong vehicle.

My 93 front Ring and Pinion was shot at 210k miles. Previous owner took care of it for the first 100k miles then gave it to his son who neglected the rig for the rest. New Spider gears, inner axles, birfs, bearings and R&P and it was as good as new....it was new really. I drove it for another 70k miles before I sold it and got my 97. In 280k miles I never had an issue with the T-case or Tranny.
