I just received this from our sat phone and Inmarsat supplier:

GARMIN 276C DISCONTINUED
Please be advised that, effective immediately, the GPS Map 276C (010-00331-51 and 010-00331-54) is now discontinued and, due to a lack of components, we will not be receiving any additional stock. Unfortunately, this means that we will have to cancel almost all outstanding orders for these units. We regret any inconvenience this will cause.

I don't know what the closest replacement/new model from Garmin would be.

I have a Garmin 378C, which I think is the current-model chartplotter from Garmin (very similar to the x76 series). There is also a 478, the only difference being that one comes pre-loaded with nautical charts instead of road maps.

I recommend it highly -- it's actually a decent GPS for normal city driving (though address entry is a pain due to the lack of keyboard), and loaded with some nice topos it rocks off road.

Garmin also have a very nice, but not widely publicized piece of software called Base Camp (google it) which is by far the nicest PC (or Mac in my case) interface for managing tracks, waypoints, maps, etc. that I've used.

Anybody know if these series Garmin Gps's 276-478 style have been upgraded/replaced with a specific new series??

I have also had several in this series and they proved to be great offroad units, and could still handle address routing on the street..

I need a new unit for my Sportsmobile and can't decide. The Garmin website has so many differnt units its crazy to sort it all out.

I need Street Address Auto Routing.

I need Lon/Lad waypoint goto ability.

I need Offroad auto routing from one GPS waypoint to another, using trails.

Obviously need ability to upload additional topos etc..

I need a great big screen, with low glare...

OK, im hard to please - but isnt every american..

I still say my laptop option is hands down the best way to go...for me at least :)
Acer Aspire One 10" $250-$300 (great laptop)
Delorme Topo Software - offroad & streets $99ish
Oziexplorer for old school USGS maps which are great here in the southwest with all the old mines & ranches $95
Globalsat B353 usb gps puck $40 to your door, fastest cold start I have ever used or go with a Garmin Etrex if you want a handheld for out of the rig.
Panavise arm for $20 and a bit of lexan or aluminum and you have a laptop mount

This setup can be removed for theft protection, carry pdf service manuals for you rig along with medical or other reference, has wifi for net access or connect with an aircard or cell phone and does so much more.

Sorry for the thread jack, I have used the 276 and really liked it, just prefer to have a better solution to fit my needs.
