Because it is an application you put on your phone or a tablet, correct it is not as good as a Garmin Tread GPS. I feel the same way about Gaia and other applications you put on a phone or tablet. It is not the same and never will be

I own the starlink mini, and android tablet

So for a $110 I could use this Dual Electronics XGPS150A

Great — using the Dual Electronics XGPS150A with an Android tablet + Starlink Wi-Fi + onX Maps is a viable and effective setup for off-grid navigation, especially in trucks or remote areas.

✅ Here's How It All Works Together:

ComponentPurpose
XGPS150AProvides accurate GPS location via Bluetooth
Android TabletRuns onX Maps and connects to both the XGPS and Starlink
Starlink MiniProvides high-speed internet for downloading map layers, weather, syncing waypoints, etc.
onX MapsUses GPS data to display position, maps, tracks, and waypoints — supports offline maps too

🔧 Setup Instructions:

1. Connect XGPS150A to Tablet via Bluetooth

  • Power on the XGPS150A.
  • Open your Android Bluetooth settings → pair with “XGPS150A”.

2. Feed GPS to onX Maps

  • Install the app Bluetooth GPS Provider.
  • Open it and tap Connect, then check "Enable Mock GPS Provider".
  • Go to Settings > Developer Options > Select mock location app → choose Bluetooth GPS Provider.

✅ Now your tablet uses the XGPS150A for location, and onX Maps will reflect your true position.

3. Connect to Starlink Wi-Fi

  • Join the Starlink Mini’s Wi-Fi like any normal network on the tablet.
  • This gives you live weather, cloud syncing, and layer downloads in onX.

4. (Optional) Pre-Download Offline Maps in onX

  • onX allows saving map areas in advance.
  • This ensures you're not dependent on Starlink signal during spotty coverage or power loss.

I have one simple question. Why are you trying to reinvent the wheel? With all this effort you could make things much simpler and just buy a GPS. It's not hard. Also with starlink you're going to pay how much in a year to have Wi-Fi? Can you even justify that cost? Not everyone can and I know I'm certainly one who cannot justify the cost.

Also keep in mind that this particular thread is about the Garmin Tread Overland and not how you can bypass it in you own special way for no reason at all......

I would agree if I did not own the startlink and I do. The starlink provides thousands of other options not only navigation. And in most cases emergency help.

Had a lot of tablet, etc users at Expo West asking how I liked my Tread Overland XL when they saw it in the old Land Rover. Asked me what I thought about Gaia and OnX and I said, respectfully, I don't think about them. Three continents, motorcycles and Land Rovers and always used dedicated GPS and now with built in satellite communication I am good. Also running a Garmin XT2 on my moto.

Just really feel like tablet (Gaia and Onx) users ask me about my GPS to let me know how much they like their tablets or Starlink especially the last few years...never really curious about the ins and outs of my Garmin.

So, point is I was surprised a bit at the people in my area asking about my Garmin as they all had Starlink, Gaia, Onx, etc...

Garmin...love or hate - it keeps it simple.

I am with you on this one. Too many individuals out there want to try and rely on Gaia or onX through a phone or tablet and isn't exactly designed like the Garmin tread series. I honestly can't understand why people want to go away from a traditional GPS when it's still tried and true technology. Extra features that the tread series have is pretty nice, but not a requirement.
