What's the best way to go about mounting gas supports. My lid will open from side to side for future RTT. The lid is approximately 200 lbs. I'm guessing here it took two of us to lift and set on the trailer. I have two 250 lb gas supports I figured with the RTT and weight of lid it would need it. The lid is 14 ga steel plate with 1" tube for frame with roof rack. Any guidance would be great thanks

I just opened up the lid to the overall height needed. Then cut a piece of wood to keep it up at that spot.
Using the advice that was found on another build, I used the math:
From hinge side..measure out two thirds of lids length and put a mark on the lid. On the tub,measure out one third of the length of it and put a mark.
Those marks are your rough measurements of where the shock will connect.
In the end...i was too chicken to drill the holes in the tub without knowing it would work. So i up'ed my odds of success and built a multi-position bracket instead. Its just a piece of 1x3 box tube with about 20 holes drilled down the center of it so you can adjust the angle of the shock.

Thanks for the direction, I popped about 9 holes in the tub before I gave up for now. Thank God for JB weld and some sand paper and paint. Having the tailgate makes for a difficult time on that side for proper mounting of the support. I'll have to revisit it in a week, heading to the beach so enough for now. Here's what the lid looks like though, it turned out good!

I can't imagine that lid weighing 200 lbs. I'd try and get an accurate weight.
This lid weighs far less than 200 lbs. I can easily lift it myself, if it wasn't so awkward.

It took two of us to lift it on the trailer. 1 inch tubing with 4 cross braces. And the roof rack is made out of 1 inch tubing with 14 ga sheet metal skinning the top. It's over a 100 for sure and u figure with the RTT weighing 115 I need 250 lb has springs. I'm going to try and use just one since I have the tail gate. Hopefully I'll have time to fab all the brackets I need this weekend. I finally figured out the proper placement for the gas spring.

I used two 250 lbs gas struts, if you look at my build toward the end we had to fabricate a bracket to hold the struts. My top weighed in at 170 lbs without the RTT and rack on top. I have a tailgate on mine also, the issue I ran into was the struts were pushing the frame out of alignment, the fix was to but tubing all the way around the tub to support it.
