I just opened up the lid to the overall height needed. Then cut a piece of wood to keep it up at that spot.
Using the advice that was found on another build, I used the math:
From hinge side..measure out two thirds of lids length and put a mark on the lid. On the tub,measure out one third of the length of it and put a mark.
Those marks are your rough measurements of where the shock will connect.
In the end...i was too chicken to drill the holes in the tub without knowing it would work. So i up'ed my odds of success and built a multi-position bracket instead. Its just a piece of 1x3 box tube with about 20 holes drilled down the center of it so you can adjust the angle of the shock.
