Gas Tank

I would like to put a bigger gas tank in my Kj. Is this something that would have to be custom made?:smiley_drive:

most likely going to have to do a custom tank.

i have one planned for my commander as a transfer flow style of tank. it will fit where the spare tire goes. it will have a fuel pump in the tank to get the fuel into the stock tank when it starts getting low. the extra tank will hold about 35 gallons for a total of 57 gallons on board.

Thank you, That sounds like a great idea for your commander. Any ideas on wherr to look for a custom tank?:smiley_drive:

transfer flow company, I checked them out and sent them a email. I will see if I can find a fabricater closer to home.:smiley_drive:

Longranger in Australia do a larger, longrange tank for the KJ, but ONLY for models pre 2005. Jeep did something with the 2005- tanks (something about putting emissions stuff in the tank?) which means that it is not practicable to make a longrange tank. As you may have gathered, I asked! There may be space under the vehicle to have a second tank installed, but that would be a custom fabrication, and when I looked, there didn't seem to be that much space for a second tank. Accordingly, I tend to go with jerrycans.

Where do you mount your Jerry cans? It was sugested that I get a Rocklizard bumper but thats about 2000 dollars.

I only take 2 at most currently. I put them in the cargo area - 1 either side and use the tie-downs to help secure them. I also put the luggage between them to brace them futher. I usually put them into strong garbage/ rubble bags in case of any spillage, although to be fair I've yet to have any leakage from a NATO can!

One of the guys (at least) on ausjeep built a plywood carrier for the cargo area to hold about 4 cans, with the carrier secured to the tie-downs. This also gave a top shelf, which with a load/dog guard, extended his storage area. I am, unfortunately, a complete klutz when it comes to making things from wood (or anything else), or I would have given it a go!

Incidentally, one of the guys on ausjeep and LOST (glend) has come up with a very neat 2 drawer storage unit, which he'll either make for you (might be expensive to ship to US) or he may be making the plans available to do it yourself. I am considering this, if he does make them available, and getting someone who is competent to make one up.

I was also thinking of the RL bumper, but as you say - it is expensive (although undoubtedly very good) and only mounts one can anyway. I'd avoid putting them on a roof rack, if you were thinking of it. I was out some years ago and the driver had put 4 fuel and 2 water cans on the roof rack of his 110. Each can was 20 litres (5 gallons). As you know, an EMPTY can is not light; a full one - especially trying to lift it down from the roof of a vehicle, was NO joke! I thought I'd need an osteopath or something!! (that's apart from any increased roll risk!)

how about a roofrack for the jerry cans?
seems to be the cheapest and easiest idea. (i personally don't like the cans inside the rig - but i also sleep inside)

regarding being top heavy - because that always comes up:
i'd ignore that factor! most expedition-guys NEVER get into a situation where that is an issue. believe me, i have done extreme trails with my rig when on tour and it's hardly ever an issue. i rolled mine twice, yes, but i haven't seen anybody else doing hard-core rock crawling on a longterm trip. most expedition rigs wouldn't be able to do hard-core trails - they are built for a different purpose...:ylsmoke:

also, i decided on cans on the new rig as well. most of the time you don't need the long range (in everyday life) and if you leave one tank empty most of the time, it's likely that rust develops. (at least in a climate like germany :))

this is probably your best and cheapest option. i bet 10 gallons would get a liberty a long way compared to my V8

Any rack suggestions? I was thinking either a baja mule or a defender rack. I like what xxx did for his rack and containers. My Kj only gets about 240 miles to a tank of gas and I believe I have a 19.5 gal tank.:smiley_drive:

i get about 300 on the highway from 20 gallons.

the defender rack is very nice. and not to expensive compared to GOBI.

the mule looks nice as well, and not to bad of a price.

for cans make sure to get NATO style and not american jerry cans. i hate my american jerry cans. they leak and are very slow when filling up a vehicle.

sorry, won't be a lot of help in the rack department, since i built mine custom...
but one suggestion for the can holders: if i would do it again i wouldn't weld them on but bolt them...

What are you going to do when you get 250 instead of 300 miles on the highway because of the drag from a roof rack?

carry more gas.:smiley_drive: i wasn't really planning on getting a roof rack though.

i already drive a brick anyway.

i plan on swapping axles to JK Rubicon axles. my gearing will go from 3.73 to 4.10. it shouldn't mess stuff up to bad.
